Martina (Chinese name: Lin Mingyue) is a doctoral student in Civilizations of Asia and Africa at Sapienza Università di Roma. In 2024, she came to Shanghai University as an exchange student. One day, while browsing in the campus bookstore, she came across the poetry collection Flying Low by Wang Jibing, a Chinese takeaway deliveryman known as the "deliveryman poet". One poem in particular, At Three in the Afternoon deeply moved her, as it reminded her of her own brother, who also works as a deliveryman in Rome—"both of them are people racing against time." With Wang Jibing’s permission, and assisted by her sinologist professor, Martina translated At Three in the Afternoon into Italian and published it in the local magazine Internazionale. Thus, the Chinese verses that "grew" from a delivery box traveled across mountains and seas to the birthplace of the Renaissance. In July 2025, before concluding her exchange program and returning to Italy, Martina traveled to Kunshan to finally meet Wang Jibing in person. Wang Jibing, whose pen name is Shihuang, a "deliveryman poet" from Kunshan, is a representative creator of China’s New Era "popular literature and art." During breaks from his delivery work, he has written poems on scraps of paper and even on the palm of his hand. Over the years, he has composed more than 6,000 poems. Poetry is the language of life and a bridge connecting different civilizations. To date, Wang Jibing’s works have been translated into multiple languages and published in five countries. In 2026, the English and French editions of his poetry collection Flying Low are scheduled to be published in the United States and France, respectively. Forget sci-fi movies, the future is already taking off in Kunshan.🚁 Air taxis are engaged in flight testing, turning the slog between Hongqiao and Pudong into a breezy 15-minute journey. Unmanned aerial trucks, which are capable of vertical takeoff and can haul 100kg loads, have been deployed. Meanwhile, robots are cleaning 10,000-ton vessels and exploring deep-sea blind spots. From heaven to ocean, Kunshan is redefining what is possible.
