So all Petrol sold in India from April 1 onwards will have a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. Now, that resolves one myth that higher Octane fuel is more energy dense, because we know ethanol isn’t as energy dense as petrol. But higher octane do have certain benefits and how will that help you and Indian carmakers going forward? I try to explain this rather complex topic as succinctly as possible.

Recently, I travelled to Graz, Austria as a guest of Mercedes-Benz India and we got to check out the Magna plant where these 2.5 crore plus SUVs are put together. Almost all of them custom-built as part of the Mercedes-Benz 'Manufaktur' - 20,000 different exterior colours and even more inside. All G-Class vehicles - G450d, G500, G63 and even the G 580EQ are built here in eastern Austria. This is an auto manufacturing plant like few others in the world.
