This Chinese humanoid robot just shattered the world record for a half marathon, finishing in 50 min 26 sec. This video shows its crash just meters before the finish line where it had to be picked up by a team of humans. The robot is from Honor, the smartphone maker and Huawei spin-off. This robot was teleoperated while others were autonomous. It seems like all the robots had battery swaps along the way.

Unitree founder Wang Xingxing: In robotics, locomotion and basic motion is mostly solved. But grasping and manipulation—anything related to haptics—hasn’t been solved. That’s the key bottleneck preventing them from being deployed at scale in factories and homes. He says that simulation is much faster for training but for manipulation tasks you still need real-world training data—for now.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on AI: “What we’ve had in the past month was a step change in the power of one large language model, but we’re going to see it from the other AI companies. And it’s important, Maria, that the U.S. stays ahead here. Imagine if China or some non-state actor were ahead of us. So what we’re determined to do is work with our AI companies to allow them to continue to innovate, but our charge in the U.S. government is maintaining safety. And there is a very important calculus here between innovation and safety. And the U.S. government, we’re going to make sure that things stay safe.”

Deng Xiaoping in 1978 in his heavy Sichuan accent: "The key to the Four Modernizations is the modernization of science and technology. Without modern science and technology, it is impossible to build modern agriculture, modern industry, and modern national defense. Without the rapid development of science and technology, there can be no rapid development of the national economy." 四个现代化,关键是科学技术的现代化。没有现代科学技术,就不可能建设现代农业、现代工业、现代国防。没有科学技术的高速度发展,也就不可能有国民经济的高速度发展。 From his famous speech at China's National Science conference. I wrote about this quote in my new piece: CHINA'S TECHNOLOGY LONG GAME

This is the new Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV's smart driving system tested on real Beijing streets. Impressive, but a few glitches: 1) right-turn signal turns on randomly 2) wrongly thinks it's about to hit a truck 3) thinks a green left-turn light is red and stops 4) to get around a stopped car, it waits till the last minute to change lanes 5) slows too early before a turn With the truck incident, a guy sitting in the back explains that the system is more sensitive around large vehicles, pedestrians, and non-motorized vehicles (like bikes). Keep in mind, it's only marketed as an assisted driving system, not a fully autonomous driving system. Here's the original video on Weibo (Chinese only):
