“Back in Black” was written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young and Brian Johnson as a tribute to AC/DC's former lead singer Bon Scott, who died in February 1980. “Beautiful Life” was released in 1995 as a single from The Bridge and became another major international hit for Ace of Base. “Just Can't Get Enough” was written by Vince Clarke and became one of the defining songs of Depeche Mode's early synth-pop era. Released in September 1981, the song was recorded at Blackwing Studios in London and became the band's first Top 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at No. 8. “Bitter Sweet Symphony” became one of the most complicated copyright stories in music history. The song samples a passage from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra’s 1965 orchestral version of the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time,” featuring a string arrangement by David Whitaker. The Verve had obtained permission to use a small sample of the recording, but ABKCO, the company controlled by former Stones manager Allen Klein, argued that the band had used more of the recording than originally agreed. After the song became a massive international hit in 1997, the dispute was settled with Richard Ashcroft surrendering the song’s publishing royalties, while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits. For 22 years Ashcroft received none of the publishing royalties from his band’s biggest hit and later said the settlement left him with just $1,000. In 2019, Jagger and Richards agreed to give up their songwriting credits and future composer royalties, allowing Ashcroft to be recognized as the song’s writer and to receive those royalties going forward. The title “Bitter Sweet Symphony” could hardly have been more appropriate.

“The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” became one of a-ha's most powerful early songs, but its recording sessions were anything but easy. Paul Waaktaar-Savoy recalled that Morten Harket and Magne Furuholmen were both suffering from influenza while the band was recording the song, even lying on camping beds in the studio with high fevers. The song was almost left off Hunting High and Low until Andrew Wickham's secretary heard it and convinced him that it was a potential hit. The track was released in 1985 as the second successful single from a-ha's debut album, Hunting High and Low. It became the band's first No. 1 single on the UK Singles Chart, while reaching No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Top 5 in Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway. Its iconic music video continues the story of “Take On Me,” with Morten Harket's character returning to the real world before a-ha perform inside a Gothic church surrounded by mannequins. “Just What I Needed” was one of four songs performed by The Cars at Live Aid 1985, at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. Their set also included “You Might Think,” “Drive” and “Heartbeat City.” “Just What I Needed” was the only song from the band’s 1978 debut album played that day, the other three came from their 1984 album Heartbeat City. "Mr. Jones" is autobiographical. Adam Duritz wrote the song after a real night out in San Francisco with his friend Marty Jones, a bass player from his earlier band. They had been watching Marty’s father, flamenco guitarist David Serva, perform, then spent the rest of the night drinking and imagining what life would be like as rock stars. Duritz later sang “I wanna be Bob Dylan” capturing that fantasy of fame. The track was released as the lead single from Counting Crows’ debut album August and Everything After (1993) and placed the band in the mainstream almost overnight. Duritz has said the lyrics became a giant irony: he sang about wanting fame before he had it and suddenly he was living exactly what he had dreamed of.

“Leave a Light On” has an unexpected guest: George Harrison played the song's distinctive slide-guitar part. Belinda Carlisle suggested his name to producer Rick Nowels when they were looking for a guitarist with a unique sound, and Harrison quickly agreed to participate. He went on to contribute not only to “Leave a Light On” but also to another track on Carlisle's 1989 album Runaway Horses, “Deep Deep Ocean.” Harrison's contribution became one of the most memorable elements of the track and Carlisle later recalled that his widow, Olivia Harrison, told her that George had agreed to participate because he loved her voice. Harrison himself was also pleased with his work: he sent producer Rick Nowels a handwritten letter with instructions concerning the mixing of his guitar part, adding in a postscript that he had developed a blister while playing the song. For a former Beatle whose appearances on other artists' records had become relatively rare, his contribution made the track particularly special.
