I heard an interesting quote today… “The devil knows your name but will call you by your mistake. God knows your mistake but will call you by your name. So when someone comes into your life and only talks about your mistakes, you already know where that comes from.” Let that sit with you for a bit.

No disrespect to this lady, each to their own as they say, but this seems completely unhinged to me!😬😮

A brief lesson in British history, linguistics and why one should never underestimate the dangers of an Atlantic language barrier. I have posted this before, but frankly, some things are simply too glorious to be confined to the archives. In 1978, Birds Eye produced a perfectly respectable television advert for faggots. Yes. I shall give you a moment. Before anyone reaches for the smelling salts, a faggot was, quite unremarkably, a traditional British pork meatball made with herbs and served in a rich onion gravy. A humble staple of British working-class cooking. Quite delicious, apparently. And then Birds Eye decided to advertise them on national television. The advert opens with a gentleman cheerfully addressing the nation with the immortal words: “Hello, faggot lovers everywhere!” I should very much like to have attended the meeting at Birds Eye when this was approved. “Any objections to the opening line, gentlemen?” “No.” “Legal?” “Perfectly sound.” “Public relations?” “Excellent.” “Splendid. We shall broadcast it to millions of people.” And so they did. Nobody screamed. Nobody complained. Nobody cancelled anyone. Nobody wrote an angry letter to the BBC. Because the word meant something entirely different in Britain at the time. It was a meatball. A pork meatball. With gravy. One could scarcely be more innocent. Then language evolved, the Atlantic did what the Atlantic does, and suddenly a completely ordinary British food advert became one of the most gloriously accidental pieces of vintage comedy ever committed to television. Imagine being a perfectly respectable 1970s Birds Eye executive, spending your afternoon proudly approving a commercial about frozen meatballs, only to discover decades later that the internet has turned your earnest little culinary masterpiece into comedy gold. The man who wrote: “Hello faggot lovers everywhere!” probably went home that evening thinking he’d had a productive day. And, technically, he had. He had sold the faggots. Quite a lot of them, I imagine. Language is a marvellous thing. It changes. Meanings shift. Words acquire entirely new lives. And occasionally, a frozen meatball commercial survives long enough to become one of the funniest things on the internet. Which is why I shall never again complain that modern television has become ridiculous. 1978 Birds Eye was out there greeting faggot lovers on national television and nobody thought anything of it. We really have lost something…. Possibly our innocence. Certainly our ability to advertise meatballs without causing an international incident. 🇬🇧 🎩Laird of the Manor🎩 💜🎩

There are times when I find myself wondering not when the world changed, but when we did. When did we stop believing that everyday life deserved a touch of beauty? There was a time when even the ordinary things were made with a certain grace. Railway stations were built like cathedrals. Libraries inspired reverence. Letters were written by hand and carried a little of the sender within them. Teacups felt elegant in the hand. Shopfronts had character. Cars had personality. A family meal was an occasion rather than a pause between distractions. Not because life was easier. It wasn’t. But because there seemed to be an understanding that beauty mattered. That craftsmanship mattered. That taking a little extra care with the details was not an extravagance, but part of what made life worth living. Today, almost everything is designed for speed. We move faster, consume faster, communicate faster. The world has become wonderfully efficient, yet strangely uniform. High streets resemble one another. Buildings are erected with little thought for permanence. Objects are replaced rather than repaired. Convenience has become king, and beauty is too often treated as an optional luxury. In our pursuit of having more, we seem to have forgotten how to savour. The old rituals have quietly slipped away. Writing letters. Polishing silver. Dressing for dinner. Lingering over conversation. Wandering through a bookshop with no intention of buying anything. Sitting in silence on a train and watching the countryside pass by. Small things, perhaps. Yet it is often the small things that give a life its texture. The world itself has not become less beautiful. The evening sun still turns stone buildings gold. Gardens still bloom after rain. Old books still carry the scent of a hundred forgotten afternoons. Church bells still echo across quiet villages. A well-laid table still invites conversation. Beauty remains all around us. The magic never truly left. We simply built a world that rewards haste and forgot that wonder requires time. Perhaps the greatest act of quiet rebellion in the modern age is to slow down. To notice. To choose quality over convenience, presence over distraction, craftsmanship over disposability. Because a rich life has never been measured by how quickly we move through it…Only by how deeply we experience it.

When Samuel Barber was but 26 years of age, he composed a single, unassuming movement for string quartet. It was not conceived as a requiem, nor fashioned as a hymn for the dead. It was simply the second movement of a chamber work, inspired by a Latin poem reflecting upon harvests and the patient labour of the fields. Yet within that melody lay something ineffable, a quiet ache no one could quite name, and so, by some shared instinct of the human heart, the world gradually began to entrust it with its mourning. It has accompanied the passing of presidents and the grief of nations: the funerals of FDR and JFK, and the solemn remembrance of Sept. 11 attacks. Again and again, this music returns, as though it alone knows how to carry the weight of collective sorrow. What Barber first entrusted to strings already possessed this gravity. Yet when the melody passes from instruments into the fragile dignity of human voices, its very nature is transformed. A string vibrates through friction; a voice vibrates from within the body itself, from lungs and diaphragm, through throat and bone. The Agnus Dei is not merely a transcription; it is a revelation. The ancient liturgical plea… grant us peace… meets a melody that seemed to understand the prayer long before it had words with which to utter it. Within the ancient vastness of Sint-Janskathedraal, where seven centuries of stone gather and return every trembling harmonic, the music seems no longer to issue from the singers at all. It rises instead from the cathedral itself… from walls, vaults, and flagstones alike. Sixty voices unfold and divide, the dynamics swelling from a breath of near-silence into a fortissimo that does not burst forth like thunder, but arrives with the slow, solemn inevitability of fate. Listen closely to that moment when every voice opens at once. There is no microphone, no artifice of amplification, only the pure generosity of Gothic acoustics. The sound lingers long after it is sung, and that lingering becomes part of the music itself: each note bearing the gentle shadow of the one that came before. Perhaps that is why the piece tightens the chest without so much as asking leave. Barber did not merely compose sorrow. He shaped, with exquisite precision, the very space that loss carves within the human heart… and the cathedral simply reveals what was always waiting there. This, Timothée Chalamet is true art. This will never die. 📽️Reelsclassics(ig)

One finds oneself in rare and rather bracing agreement with Bev Turner (GBNews), whose outrage is not merely theatrical but entirely warranted. Her fury toward Meghan Markle is delivered with admirable bluntness, condemning the continued use of princely titles for children so conspicuously removed from royal duty. “Absolutely disgusting!” she pronounces, and quite right too. There is, after all, something profoundly unseemly in clinging to the gilded trappings of an institution one has so publicly and (presumably) profitably abandoned.

Her Royal Highness, The Princess of Wales, laid a wreath with solemn grace at London’s hallowed memorials, honouring the valour of those who answered duty’s call. From the blood-soaked shores of Gallipoli to the trials of the present day, she paid tribute to every Australian and New Zealander who has given so much in service on this sacred ANZAC Day. Lest we forget.

“Let’s be honest, Meghan hasn’t sold enough jams or dog biscuits in the last 12 months and everything these two have touched has been a complete failure…So the grifters are here for money, that’s all I can put it down to!” What an epic quote from GBNews!
