Elon, owning X does not give you a veto over India’s national security. 🇮🇳 I support the Government of India’s insistence on rigorous security safeguards before satellite communication services begin operating. Protecting our citizens, their data and our critical communications infrastructure must come first. The same standards should apply to every operator, Indian or foreign. I have spent my life building businesses and challenging established thinking. I believe in ambition, innovation and competition. I also believe that doing business in a country requires respect for its laws and institutions. The personal badgering of Mukesh Ambani is completely uncalled for. Calling him “Prime Minister Ambani” contributes nothing to a serious discussion about connectivity or regulatory approvals. If there is evidence of unfair treatment, put it on the table. Sarcasm is no substitute for evidence. India deserves the best technology available, including satellite connectivity for communities that need it. Every applicant deserves a fair, transparent and timely process. Every applicant must also demonstrate that it meets the required safeguards. My position is straightforward: compete, innovate, meet the standards and earn the opportunity. India’s security is non-negotiable. No individual’s wealth, influence or follower count should change that. THE COACH IS NOT THE CALENDAR. Gautam Gambhir is a dear friend, but my support for him today is not based on friendship. It is based on fairness, experience and cricketing common sense. Indian cricket has developed a dangerous habit: celebrate people when they win, then look for one individual to publicly sacrifice when results turn against us. One difficult run does not suddenly make Gautam a poor coach. It does not erase his achievements, his cricketing intelligence, his leadership or the winning mentality he has brought to every team he has represented. Should his selections and tactics be questioned? Absolutely. That comes with the job. Gautam himself would expect nothing less. But before blaming only the coach, perhaps we should also question the people constructing these punishing schedules. Our players came through an intense IPL season and were immediately pushed into international cricket, different countries, different conditions and back-to-back series—with inadequate time to rest, recover, practise or mentally reset. Players are not machines. Coaches are not magicians. You cannot create exhaustion administratively and then blame the dressing room when performance suffers. India must decide what matters most. The IPL should remain the priority and the centrepiece of the cricketing calendar. ICC tournaments and meaningful Test cricket must be protected. Bilateral series should be selective, competitive and commercially relevant. Meaningless one-day series that add little beyond television inventory should be scrapped. More cricket does not automatically mean better cricket. Gautam must be judged over a full cycle, not condemned after one bad passage. Review the cricketing decisions—but also review the calendar, the travel, the recovery periods and the workload placed upon our players. Stand by the coach. Protect the players. Fix the schedule. Then demand results. I stand firmly with my friend Gautam Gambhir. Lalit Modi Founder, IPL

The #SanjivGoenka Meme Challenge has officially come to an end. Congratulations to our winner! 🏆 The judging panel has made its decision, and the results have now been sent for independent auditing. Our team will be in touch with the winner shortly, with the official announcement coming on 24 July. A huge thank you to everyone who participated. The creativity, wit and humour on display throughout this IndianPremierLeague challenge were outstanding. The competition was incredibly close, and your memes kept us entertained from start to finish. We also learnt a lot about what truly resonates with cricket fans. As with every competition, there can only be one winner… but you all made this challenge a memorable one. See you on 24 July for the big reveal! 🎉

The mistake many analysts are making is that they are treating IPL like it is still a pure television property. It is not. The IPL has evolved into a multi-screen, multi-platform entertainment ecosystem. The audience has not disappeared. The audience has migrated. Here is the correct strategic narrative: ⸻ IPL: The Screen Changed. The Audience Did Not. The headlines screaming “IPL viewership decline” are selectively quoting one metric: Average Minute Audience on linear television. That is only one part of the ecosystem. What those headlines ignore is the far more important structural shift taking place across global sports consumption: * Viewers are moving from broadcast TV to OTT * Families are splitting viewing across devices * Young audiences prefer mobile and Connected TV * Advertisers increasingly want measurable engagement, not just TV ratings The IPL is not shrinking. It is transforming faster than traditional media can measure. ⸻ The Real Story Is Total Reach In 2008, IPL operated in a largely television-driven India. Today, IPL lives simultaneously across: * Linear television * Mobile streaming * Tablets * Connected TVs * Smart TVs * Multi-device households * Social amplification ecosystems That changes how audiences are counted. The cumulative reach across platforms in IPL 2026 has already crossed 1.06 billion viewers, with the playoffs still to come. That is not decline. That is scale expansion. ⸻ Television Ratings Fell. But The Universe Expanded. Yes, TV ratings are lower. But the interpretation matters. Linear TV was once the only screen. Now it is simply one screen among many. Connected TV concurrency is up 61% YoY. Opening weekend watch time rose 26% YoY. The audience did not leave IPL. They upgraded their screens. ⸻ IPL Is Following The Same Pattern As Every Major Global Sports Property This is not unique to cricket. The same transition happened with: * NFL * NBA * Premier League * Formula 1 * Olympics Traditional TV softens while: * streaming explodes, * mobile dominates younger demographics, * and connected TV becomes the premium household screen. The IPL is simply entering the next phase earlier and faster because India is one of the world’s most mobile-first digital economies. ⸻ Why Advertisers Are Shifting To Digital Television can tell you: * a household watched. Digital can tell you: * who watched, * for how long, * on what device, * whether they interacted, * and whether they bought. That is the future of advertising economics. Which is why: * 125 new brands entered the digital IPL ecosystem this season * Connected TV ad pricing continues to strengthen * Watch time across combined platforms is projected to exceed last year’s record levels The monetisation engine is evolving. ⸻ The Most Important Metric: Total Consumption The real measure of sports dominance is not one-screen TV ratings anymore. It is: * cumulative reach, * total watch time, * engagement depth, * concurrency, * advertiser demand, * and cross-platform dominance. By that measurement, IPL remains one of the most powerful sports-entertainment properties on earth. Projected combined watch time for IPL 2026: 850–900 billion minutes. That is extraordinary. ⸻ The Strategic Perspective Critics are looking at IPL through a 2008 lens. But IPL in 2026 is no longer: * a cricket tournament, * or even just a TV product. It is: * a digital entertainment ecosystem, * a mobile-first phenomenon, * and one of the largest real-time engagement platforms in the world. The measurement model changed. The audience behaviour changed. The scale did not shrink. It expanded. “The IPL did not lose its audience. The audience simply changed screens. Measuring a digital-first global sports property only through television ratings is like measuring the internet through newspaper circulation.” IndianPremierLeague Press Trust of India JioHotstar espn starsport ESPN
