Today, I was officially sworn in at Parliament. I took this Oath in order to serve the people of Arbroath and Broughty Ferry - and declared that my loyalty will always be to the people of Scotland. It is a privilege to serve and represent our communities as your Member of Parliament.

For the first time ever, there are First Ministers in Scotland, in Wales and in the North of Ireland who are all committed to independence from the United Kingdom. Today, those leaders have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together. It is not for Westminster to decide our future, and Andy Burnham does not have the authority to take these decisions off the table. Each of our nations has the right to determine their own future, through democratic means and in accordance with the wishes of its people.

Scotland is on the front line of defending the High North. Yet the Labour Government spends 7x more on defence in the South East of England than in the whole of Scotland. An independent Scotland would never let our north coast go undefended. I asked the Defence Secretary if the UK Government will finally put a permanent surface vessel in Scotland - the absence of which is currently a dangerous negation of Labours responsibility to Scotland.

I cannot forgive the UK Government for how long they have known about Palestine suffering at the hands of the IDF and Israeli Government, and failed to do anything about it. I cannot forget how many Palestinians have been killed because the UK Government have been too scared to act. Speaking to Pod Save the UK about why I think so many backbenchers lack a moral compass.

While student loans and rising student debt are dominating the conversation at Westminster, it’s worth remembering that the SNP Government scrapped tuition fees in 2008. We did so because we don’t believe anyone no matter their background should face financial barriers to accessing higher education. No one should be punished for choosing to go to university, and education should be based on ability to learn — not ability to pay.

📻 Speaking to Nicky Campbell on BBC Radio 5 Live today, I welcomed the approval of Jackdaw, highlighting the importance of protecting Scottish jobs and industry while building our renewable energy future. 🥀 It’s taken Labour over 50 years to back the SNP’s call for an oil wealth fund, as in Norway. 🔍 Will they now commit to investing Scotland’s oil revenues in our renewables and jobs here at home?

Tory or Labour. Blue or red. Different UK governments, same outcome for Scotland. The scars of Thatcher’s deindustrialisation are still felt in communities across Scotland. Decades later, successive Westminster governments continue to make decisions that put jobs, industries and workers at risk. For our communities in the North East and across Scotland, it doesn’t matter what colour Westminster is when the result is the same — lost jobs, weakened industries and communities left behind.

⚡️ Scotland is energy rich. Our people shouldn’t be paying some of the highest energy bills in Europe. The cut to VAT on energy bills is welcome. But while families might save £45 a year, bills remain £600 higher than Labour promised. 🏴 Scotland has the energy. We need the power to bring bills down for people in Scotland.
