Today I stood with Tom and Jessica Gorman outside the Yorktown Police Department. This month, when we should have been celebrating Sheridan's birthday, Jessica finally found the courage to open the letter her daughter wrote in her senior year at Yorktown High School. It was a class assignment addressed to her future self, a future that was stolen from her. It ended with one line: "Make sure you love up Mom and Dad. And remember to always be kind." Sheridan Gorman was, in her mother's words, 18 years of pure light. She was murdered in Chicago by a man who never should have been in this country. He was detained at the border and released. Arrested again and then released, again. "A 10-second phone call from the Chicago Police Department to ICE could have saved my daughter's life," Jessica told us today. "Ten seconds." And as Tom said: "For politicians, sanctuary policy is a debate. But for me, sanctuary policy has a face. It is the face of my beautiful, spirited 18-year-old daughter." The Gormans should not have had to stand at a podium today. They did it so no other family has to. Governor Hochul, listen to them. End New York's sanctuary policies. Put public safety first. For once in your career, listen to the victims of crime and stand with them, rather than with the criminals.

We are seeing an alarming rise in antisemitism across the country, and the incident that occurred on Tuesday night is a stark reminder of that. For an individual to belligerently confront me because they believed I was Jewish is shocking and unacceptable. Worse than that, however, was the antisemitic diatribe that followed — blaming Jews for a myriad of issues. In NY-17, I’m proud to represent one of the largest Jewish populations in the United States, and I will always stand up for them and for all of my constituents.

I’ve challenged my opponent to six debates and even offered to hold them in territory that are a bit more favorable to her. Voters deserve to hear from both candidates, but she continues to refuse because she can’t clearly articulate or defend her positions. The fact is, since Mike Bloomberg left office in 2013, New York City’s budget has increased by $40 billion, a 50% increase, on top of New York State increasing its spending by over $100 billion. New York City now spends more than the entire state of Florida, despite Florida having about 23 million residents and NYC just over 8 million. And Zohran Mamdani is set to worsen the city’s fiscal situation by demanding that Kathy Hochul and the state legislature raise taxes by $9 billion, or else he will increase city property taxes by 9.5%, the highest in the country.

Jayapal and Raskin would not even listen to the tragic story of Sheridan Gorman, a constituent of mine from Yorktown, who was senselessly murdered by an illegal immigrant protected by Democrats’ sanctuary policies. Sanctuary policies have real consequences, and I will continue to fight to end them.

As a lifelong New Yorker, I am stunned by where we are today. Mamdani has appointed an attorney who represented a 9/11-linked al-Qaeda terrorist as his chief counsel. One of his first acts was to repeal executive orders that defined antisemitism and ensured that city agencies enforced that definition. This is truly mind boggling.

The American people were rightly frustrated during the Biden years, when we had open borders, allowing more than 10.5 million migrants to flood into the country. Over the last nine months, illegal border crossings have effectively stopped with net-zero crossings. Most Americans agree that we need to deport criminal aliens. I also believe that most Americans agree that if you have been in this country for a number of years, are working, have not committed crimes, and have children or grandchildren who are American citizens, there should be a legal path forward. This is not amnesty or a pathway to citizenship under any circumstances for anyone who broke our laws by coming to the United States.

It was also meaningful to see Yorktown’s Sheridan Gorman recognized, with her mother’s remarks leaving not a dry eye in the room.
