Today, I tabled Bill C-413 to help combat Residential School denialism. In honor of Orange Shirt Day, I extend this gift to survivors and their families on behalf of myself and all my colleagues. May you find justice and healing in the protection of your stories.

Today I was honoured to table my private member's bill, an Act to Amend the Criminal Code (Promotion of Hatred against Indigenous Peoples), to add to the Criminal Code the promotion of hatred through residential school denialism. We owe survivors more than words, we owe them action. This bill is about protecting their safety, honouring their truths and ensuring that the hard-won truth of what happened in residential schools is never erased or denied again. I call on all Members of Parliament to stand with survivors to protect the truth, uphold dignity and walk the path of real reconciliation together.

Today I swore in the House because “f*ck” and “sh*t” are taken more seriously as unparliamentary behaviour than normalized racism. We need to address escalating racism in the House and MP Redekopp must be held accountable for equating racial background with criminal behaviour.

Today I joined Indigenous women’s organizations condemning the Liberal government's appalling $7 billion cuts to Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations, two ministries that are already grossly underfunded. And it's especially disturbing that at the same time they're investing billions into the military industrial complex, ignoring their legal obligations to end the ongoing genocide against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. The federal government has accepted the findings of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and has recognized that this violence amounts to an ongoing genocide. Carney is backtracking commitments to MMIWG2S+ through his so called “national interest projects”. Is the safety of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people not in the national interest? Without delay, it must reverse these callous cuts and immediately commit to providing long term, sustainable funding to organizations, agencies and family groups to address the growing violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

The moment when the House of Commons voted unanimously to call on the federal government to declare #MMIWG2S a Canada-wide emergency and implement a Red Dress Alert system. This government must speed up their delivery of resources and funding to stop this violence. #cdnpoli

The Conservatives are now desperately trying to outdo the Liberals’ anti-migrant policies by denying essential healthcare to migrants and refugees. Thank you to my NDP colleague Jenny Kwan for speaking the truth: this is nothing but preying on the most vulnerable for political gain.

Most of the PSAC-AFPC workers on strike are women, some are trying to raise their kids on $40,000 a year. Justin Trudeau is ripping off women workers and he's cutting $150 million from women's shelters. Who does he think he's fooling with his fake feminism? #cdnpoli

Bill C-5 violates the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate Indigenous peoples, diminishes environmental oversight, and puts workers and communities at risk. I and my NDP colleagues oppose Bill C-5 in its current form. I demand that the federal government uphold their constitutional obligations to obtain free, prior and informed consent.

Yesterday I, along with NDP colleagues Lori Idlout and Jenny Kwan, stood with Ontario Chiefs giving the Liberal government a clear message on Bill C-5: we will not stand for the violation of Indigenous peoples’ constitutional rights. Watch the full press conference here:
