Comparing my animation from last year to this year (oof🫣) 2024: me just messing around in Unreal Sequencer to teach myself gameplay animation and learn UE blueprints and environment tools. 2025: realized I couldn't figure out the nuances of gameplay animation out on my own, so I took a class. I wanted to make a real game for Steam, and I thought the Halloween characters from my old educational project would be fun to use again in a whole new game. One year of practice can really make a difference! Don't give up! #gameanimation

🎃 can finally jump YAAAAAY! This took me longer than I thought. Lots of trouble shooting, one of which was because my export range set in Maya was incorrect and I didn't realize it 💀 I wanna do another jump while sprinting but need move onto his combat. Light attack up next!

What I learned at Pixar for creating fluid animation ⬇️ Focusing on your extremes and making sure each axis in both translations and rotation hits its extreme on different frames is what makes animation fluid. Also make sure the extremes of different parts of the body hit on different frames as well. Essentially this is how I think and approach animating drag and follow through and create arcs

I specifically made Seamus do a cartwheel as he lands so that the player can see his face. Most of the time we only see his back so I thought this would help the player connect to him more 🎃 I think little choices like these can go a long way

What I learned at Pixar for creating fluid animation, Part 2 ⬇️ I thought I would make another quick video going into more detail of how extremes create fluid animation. Focusing on your extremes automatically incorporates arcs, overlap and drag. Study your video reference to see where extremes naturally occur and exaggerate as needed for your animation style

My game and its sources of inspiration 🎃 I got a lot of work ahead of me but I've been learning so much and enjoying the process! I had to figure out the intent behind the game through animation first since I'm an animator, which is not a good workflow for gamedev😅 That's okay tho, now that I have a sense of direction I will be moving onto proper greyboxing now

Game devs, did you know you can use Unreal's Sequencer and rigging to edit animation from Mixamo, Fab, or the Unity Asset Store? Then you can import those animations into Unity, Godot, or Unreal! Animators, if you want to learn how to edit mocap, this is a great introduction. The workflow and concepts I show can be used in Blender and Maya. Full video on my YT.

New character animation! Introducing these goofy skeleton enemies! They're going to be a lot of fun. I'm taking inspiration from the old 1930s cartoons for their movement. I'll be working on both 💀 and 🎃 from now on to more easily define the animation art direction of my game.
