why Naval deleted his calendar, ghosts everyone, and refuses to be anywhere at a specific time Naval: "I read a blog post by Marc Andreessen where he said don't keep a schedule. And I took that to heart. So I deleted my calendar and I don't keep a schedule. I try to remember it all in my head. If I can't remember it, I'm not going to add it." "I have a nasty email autoresponder that says, I don't check email and don't text me either. If you need to find me, you'll find me." "My wife knows not to ever book or schedule me for anything. I'm not expected to go to couples dinners. I'm not expected to go to birthdays. I'm not expected to go to weddings. If somebody tries to rope her into having me show up, she says he makes his own decisions. You got to ask him directly." Chris: "Are you not killing serendipity in a way?" Naval: "No. I'm freeing up all my time. So my entire life is serendipity. I get to interact with whoever I want, whenever I want, wherever."

Joe Rogan on why the grizzly beats the gorilla and the tiger, and it has nothing to do with size: The argument starts as a hot take and turns into a case. Rogan: "Grizzly would kill a gorilla, dude." First he splits the grizzly in two, because not all of them are the same animal. Rogan: "There's mountain grizzlies, and then there's coastal brown bears, which are the same species, but they have much more access to protein. They're just eating salmon all day. And moose. Those things are giant." Rogan: "They're huge. They run 40 miles an hour." Then he turns to the gorilla, and points at the one feature that should win the argument for it. Rogan: "Silverbacks have canines that are just for posturing." Rogan: "Every other thing that has canines as big as a gorilla kills things. They just eat vegetables." The weapons are real. The experience is not. Even its nearest relatives hunt, which makes the gap stranger. Rogan: "Chimps are very carnivorous. They eat a lot of meat. They eat a lot of monkeys." Rogan: "But really, what they want is monkeys. That's their favorite thing to eat." Rogan: "I had the director on. And he said, they didn't even show all the chimps eating monkeys." Someone puts a Siberian tiger in the ring instead. Rogan does not take that either, and the reason is the same reason. Rogan: "They're designed to fight. A cat is not necessarily designed to fight. They're designed to kill things." Rogan: "I don't think the big cat is used to fighting." Killing is an ambush. Fighting is a fight. Rogan: "Grizzlies fight each other all the time and they fight for like 20 minutes and they tear each other apart and they don't get hurt." Rogan: "Their skin is so flexible and so thick that they get just bit down on and they're shaking each other and then they just shake it off like nothing happened." Rogan: "Grizzlies are out there. They're like Tyson in their prime. It's every two weeks." He has watched it happen, hunting black bears over bait in Alberta. Rogan: "They'll decide like who gets the bait, or they'll decide that a female is hot and she's ready to have sex, and they'll fight over the female." Rogan: "I watched these two dudes just go at it, like 30 yards away." The gorilla is stronger. The tiger is deadlier. The grizzly has done this hundreds of times.

Warren Buffett on what actually makes a life successful: 1. "if you get to be 65 or 70 and the people you want to love you actually love you, you're a success." i've met very rich men. testimonial dinners. schools named after them. and nobody loves them. their own kids say "he's in the attic." 2. the best investment you'll ever make is in yourself. learn to communicate. on paper and in person. if you can't get your idea across, it's like winking at a girl in the dark. nothing happens. get good at it and you raise your own value 50%. and nobody can ever take it from you. 3. you get one mind and one body. that's the whole deal. say i gave you a car and told you it's the only one you get for the rest of your life. you'd read the manual. keep it in the garage. baby it. you get exactly one body like that. you can't start caring for it at 50. by then it's rusted out. 4. you become whoever you spend your time with. you drift in the direction of the people around you. so pick people better than you. the biggest pick of your life is your spouse. marry someone a little better than you. and hope they don't figure it out too fast. 5. with money, doing nothing beats doing something. a farm or an apartment, you can't sell it tomorrow. so you just hold it. stocks you can sell in a second. so people can't help themselves. but moving your money around isn't smarter than leaving it alone. buy a piece of america and stop touching it.

Elon Musk explains why he doesn't need motivation to keep going: He is asked where he finds the strength to keep going when experts he admires have already failed at the same problem. He rejects the question. Elon: "That's really not how I think about things." Elon: "For me, it's simply this is something that is important to get done and we should just keep doing it or die trying, and I don't need a source of strength." Asked whether quitting ever comes up. Elon: "It's not in my nature." Elon: "And I don't care about optimism or pessimism. Fuck that, we're gonna get it done."

Jordan Peterson on how to know if someone is right for you: 1. Living together first doesn't protect you. the evidence points the other way. people who live together are more likely to get divorced, not less. 2. the real test isn't love. it's whether you can negotiate. you should know someone long enough to know you two can tell each other the truth and negotiate. that's the most important part of a relationship. 3. so talk about the boring things. who buys the groceries. who pays the bills. who cooks and when. who does which chores and is it laid out fair. you either sit down like a conscious, articulate couple and negotiate it, or you bring your unconscious assumptions in and clash where they don't match. 4. attraction still matters. if you have that massive erotic attraction, you're unbelievably fortunate and you should do everything you can to maintain it. but that takes real effort and will. and you have to ally it with maturity. what does this look like at the level of detail. money. where you live. careers. children. in-laws. 5. commitment comes first, not after. unless you've made a lifetime commitment, one you're not going to back out of, you won't take the relationship seriously enough to make it high quality. an idea he took from reading carl jung. "shackled together" is a cynical way of putting it. it's more like an unbreakable bond that makes both people better. 6. the hard part is telling the truth. and the truth is generally a horrible thing. it's easy to tell the truth when everyone wants to hear what you have to say. it's very difficult when no one wants to hear it, least of all yourself. 7. you're braiding one rope. you have the strands of your life, your partner has theirs, and you tie them together into something stronger. then you undertake massive adventures. a household. joint careers. each other's mental and physical health. kids. all of it very, very challenging. 8. marriage and child rearing get a bad rap in our culture and he thinks that's a catastrophe. even if you're highly career oriented, that's two thirds of your life. his house has been a sanctuary, and that's part of why he's been effective at work. 9. and it decides your second half. he's 55. both his kids just got engaged in the same month. he might have 40 more years, and now there are grandchildren coming. all that negotiating early is what buys you something to advance into.

Michael Jordan on the one thing he wants more than anything at 54 "me, I need no more admiration. I've had enough, and it's been great." "I'm still going to be a very positive force within the community, with the kids of tomorrow, but I got my own kids, I got my own wife. I mean, I'm 54 years old." "I want to be able to go through a day, or go through a week, not worrying about what I got to do Wednesday, what I got to do Thursday, because I never enjoy Monday." "and sometimes I surprise the sh!t out of myself saying look, I got nothing to do today. oh, I got nothing to do tomorrow. I got nothing to do on Wednesday." "that's to me is ultimately retirement. that's where I want to be."

Jordan Peterson breaks down how to shut off social anxiety the moment you walk in: "You go to a party, your heart's beating. Why? The party is a monster. Why? Because it's judging you. It's putting you low down the dominance hierarchy, because that's what a negative judgment is" "That interferes with your sexual success, and that means you're being harshly evaluated by nature itself. So you're confronting the dragon of chaos when you go into the social situation" "And what do you do? You hunch over, and that's low dominance. I'm no threat. Well, that's not going to get you very far. But it's a logical thing to do in the face of a tyrant. You look at the king and you're dead. I'm no threat, I'm hunched over" "And then what's happening internally? What are people thinking about me? Am I looking stupid? Am I looking foolish? I'm awkward. I hate being here. I'm sweating too much. It's all internalized, it's all self-focused" "You can't tell someone to stop thinking about something, because they get caught in the loop. It's like don't think of a white elephant. White elephant, white elephant, white elephant" "What you do with socially anxious people is you say, look at other people. Look at them. Because if you look at them, you can tell what they're thinking" "If you're ever speaking to a group of people, never speak to the group of people. That doesn't exist. You talk to individuals, and then they reflect for you the entire group, because they're all entrained. You look at one person and they broadcast you everyone's thinking" "As soon as you focus on the person, not you, you push your attention outward and you start watching. Well then all your automatic mechanisms kick in and you stop being awkward" "If we're talking and I'm looking over here, I don't know what you're going to do next, and I'm going to put disjunctions in, like bad chords in the melody of our conversation. And the reason is I'm not paying attention" "That's why the eye is the thing at the top of the pyramid. It's the thing that enables you to win the set of all possible dominance hierarchies"

Jordan Peterson's warning about a parenting mistake you can't fix after age four: "If the kid doesn't get that right between two and four, it's over. They're never going to learn it." "The parents are doing their best to make the child acceptable to other children. That's your damn job as a parent." "If your child isn't acceptable to other children, they won't play with your child. And then your child will be lonesome and isolated and awkward, and they will never recover." "The other kids accelerate forward, that kid's left behind." "There's a huge literature on trying to rectify antisocial children from the age of four on. It's like, no, you can't." "You're acting as a proxy for the social environment as a parent. A gentle proxy, an informative proxy, maybe even a merciful proxy, but a proxy nonetheless." "They're going to be out there among people who don't really care about them. And if they don't have something to bring to the table, at least the ability to cooperate, they're going to be lonesome and isolated."

jordan peterson on choosing a partner for marriage: 1. Attraction isn't optional. it's weird and biological. scientists once rated men by how symmetrical their faces were, then had them wear the same t-shirt for a day. women rated the symmetrical men's body odor as more attractive. smell alone gave it away. 2. after attraction, trust is everything. no marriage survives without it. you have to be able to tell each other the truth. 3. think of marriage as handcuffing yourself to someone. you tell them the truth, they tell you the truth, and neither of you gets to run away. that's what forces you to actually grow instead of hiding. 4. our culture massively undervalues marriage. it's roughly a third of your life. kids are another third. skipping either one is a bigger mistake than people realize. 5. look for someone who'd be a good mother. if a woman's in her mid-twenties and still doesn't know she wants kids, that's usually a sign something's off psychologically. not always. but usually.

Jordan Peterson on the trade-off between a great career and a good life: 1. you can get a long way by concentrating on nothing but your career. a minority of men do this. 70, 80 hours a week, flat out. they're staking everything on a small probability of exceptional status in one narrow domain. it works. it's also hard on them. no family, no leisure, no life outside the work. they get very one-dimensional. 2. that one-dimensionality might be the price of being exceptional. if you want to be a genius level mathematician, or a scientist at the top, you're in the lab all the time. smart, dedicated, narrow. that's how you beat everyone else doing the same thing. it may be the only way. if you love it, more power to you. but you're going to pay for it. 3. the math is additive and brutal. if i'm smart and hardworking and i crank out 70 hours a week, and you do 30, in two years i'm so far ahead of you that you will never catch up. 4. jung thought men go after perfection and women go after wholeness. perfection is stake it all on one thing and look for radical success. wholeness asks a different question. do you want one thing in your life at 150 percent, or five things at 80 percent? there is a lot more richness in the five. 5. a family. something meaningful outside of work. a network of friends. those three or four things alone are plenty to keep you oriented. and if one of them collapses, everything doesn't go. the price is that the more you optimize the balance, the less likely you are to be fantastically successful at any single one. considered across a whole life, that might still be the winning strategy. 6. most women bail out of unidimensional careers in their 30s. they won't put in the 80 hours it takes to dominate a field. they decide it isn't worth it, and no wonder. two things drive it. socioeconomic status makes a man more attractive on the mating market and does not do the same for a woman. and a woman's timeframe is compressed. a guy can say he'll have kids later until he's 80. she can't. 7. one in three couples over 30 has fertility problems. defined as not conceiving after a year of trying. one in three. wanting children and not getting them is one of the common routes to extreme unhappiness, and if it happens to you, you're in the medical mill for ten years. worth thinking about before it's the thing you're thinking about.

Elon Musk's Biggest Fear Isn't Failure. It's Being Alone. 1. He says it plainly: he can't be alone and doesn't want to be. people tell him they're happy alone. he doesn't buy it. he thinks most people just made peace with it. 2. asked directly if he feels lonely, he says yes, there are times. 3. the clearest example he gives: working on the rocket down in south texas, staying in a little house by himself. if his dog is there, it's fine. if he forgets the dog, he's alone in a little house with not even a dog. 4. fame took away the easy version of company. he used to walk down the street or go to the store. now buying a coffee at the corner store is difficult. at restaurants he looks for a corner table, dimly lit, somewhere out of the way. 5. work doesn't cover the gap. he says love of work, in his experience, can only make you halfway happy. asked if his biggest hope is to really be in love, he says he has been in the past, and leaves it there. 6. the same fear scales up in everything he builds. downloading a person into a robot, memories and personality intact. a city on mars so humanity lasts longer. consciousness is a small candle in a vast darkness, and he doesn't want it put out.

Jordan Peterson on what scares him more than death "You know, I was ready to die a year ago. And not casually. I had people I loved. So no, I'm not very worried about me, but I am very worried about making a mistake." "Do I fear I've become a Jordan Peterson impersonator? I think I worry about it more than anything else. I hope. I hope I do. I better." "Has fame corrupted me? No doubt. In some regard. It's a very difficult thing to avoid, because things change around you." "Not if the red carpet is rolled out to you while you're on your way to perdition. That's not a good deal. You just get there more efficiently." "If you gaze into the abyss long enough, you see the light, not the darkness. I'm betting my life on it." "The angel of death sits on every word." "I'd wake up every morning. Time short, get at it. Time short, get at it. There's things to do." "I heard Elon Musk talk about that a couple of months ago. Someone asked him about death and he said just offhand, 'That'd be a relief.' And then he went on with the conversation." "I'm more afraid of hell than death. I don't know if it follows or if it's always here. And I think we're gonna find out." "You're more likely to die terribly if you live in a manner that brings you to hell. That's one connection."

Jordan peterson on the one thing women everywhere look for in men: 1. Across every culture on earth, women go for men who are older and of higher status. about four to five years older on average. it holds worldwide. the gap shrinks a little in rich countries, because there it's easier to stand on your own feet. men don't do the reverse. a man's pick mostly ignores the woman's status. 2. But it was never really about money or age. those are stand-ins. what women are actually reading is health. if you're healthy and full of energy, you're far more likely to succeed at anything. it's very hard to win when you're sick. so status is just a signal that the body underneath is working. 3. And we read health without knowing we're doing it. symmetry is one marker. the more symmetrical a face or body, the healthier the person tends to be. butterflies do the same thing. a butterfly won't mate with another if it's off-balance by the tiniest amount you can imagine. 4. The body sends signals you never agreed to send. shoulder width compared to waist. this ratio get read in an instant. it happens below the surface, but it's happening constantly. 5. Here's the twist. most animals compete on size. with elephant seals, the males are giant and keep harems, and the biggest one wins. humans went another way. women started selecting for intelligence and reliability instead of raw power. men raced to keep up. and that arms race is part of what grew the human brain.

Joe Rogan asked Mike Tyson why he still wants to fight at 54. The answer wasn't about money, legacy, or proving anyone wrong. He admits the thing most fighters never say out loud. Tyson: "Sometimes I struggle with the fact that there's the possibility I can really hurt somebody." Rogan assumed that meant guilt. That he didn't want to hurt them. It's the opposite. Tyson: "That is... sometimes it's orgasmic." Not fear. Not nerves. Something closer to pleasure. He can't even fully explain it himself, so he turns the question back on Rogan. Tyson: "What does it mean when fighting gets you erect? What does that mean?" And then he lands on the real thing driving him back into the ring. It isn't the winning. It isn't the crowd. Tyson: "Maybe not fear-based, but embracing the fact that you're gonna go into this with everything you have, the chaos of it all, and the ultimate goal is to hurt somebody." That's the part that separates him. Most people fight to win. Tyson fights for the chaos. The hurting isn't a side effect of the goal. It is the goal.
