Joe Rogan on why the grizzly beats the gorilla and the tiger, and it has nothing to do with size: The argument starts as a hot take and turns into a case. Rogan: "Grizzly would kill a gorilla, dude." First he splits the grizzly in two, because not all of them are the same animal. Rogan: "There's mountain grizzlies, and then there's coastal brown bears, which are the same species, but they have much more access to protein. They're just eating salmon all day. And moose. Those things are giant." Rogan: "They're huge. They run 40 miles an hour." Then he turns to the gorilla, and points at the one feature that should win the argument for it. Rogan: "Silverbacks have canines that are just for posturing." Rogan: "Every other thing that has canines as big as a gorilla kills things. They just eat vegetables." The weapons are real. The experience is not. Even its nearest relatives hunt, which makes the gap stranger. Rogan: "Chimps are very carnivorous. They eat a lot of meat. They eat a lot of monkeys." Rogan: "But really, what they want is monkeys. That's their favorite thing to eat." Rogan: "I had the director on. And he said, they didn't even show all the chimps eating monkeys." Someone puts a Siberian tiger in the ring instead. Rogan does not take that either, and the reason is the same reason. Rogan: "They're designed to fight. A cat is not necessarily designed to fight. They're designed to kill things." Rogan: "I don't think the big cat is used to fighting." Killing is an ambush. Fighting is a fight. Rogan: "Grizzlies fight each other all the time and they fight for like 20 minutes and they tear each other apart and they don't get hurt." Rogan: "Their skin is so flexible and so thick that they get just bit down on and they're shaking each other and then they just shake it off like nothing happened." Rogan: "Grizzlies are out there. They're like Tyson in their prime. It's every two weeks." He has watched it happen, hunting black bears over bait in Alberta. Rogan: "They'll decide like who gets the bait, or they'll decide that a female is hot and she's ready to have sex, and they'll fight over the female." Rogan: "I watched these two dudes just go at it, like 30 yards away." The gorilla is stronger. The tiger is deadlier. The grizzly has done this hundreds of times.

Jordan Peterson on how to know if someone is right for you: 1. Living together first doesn't protect you. the evidence points the other way. people who live together are more likely to get divorced, not less. 2. the real test isn't love. it's whether you can negotiate. you should know someone long enough to know you two can tell each other the truth and negotiate. that's the most important part of a relationship. 3. so talk about the boring things. who buys the groceries. who pays the bills. who cooks and when. who does which chores and is it laid out fair. you either sit down like a conscious, articulate couple and negotiate it, or you bring your unconscious assumptions in and clash where they don't match. 4. attraction still matters. if you have that massive erotic attraction, you're unbelievably fortunate and you should do everything you can to maintain it. but that takes real effort and will. and you have to ally it with maturity. what does this look like at the level of detail. money. where you live. careers. children. in-laws. 5. commitment comes first, not after. unless you've made a lifetime commitment, one you're not going to back out of, you won't take the relationship seriously enough to make it high quality. an idea he took from reading carl jung. "shackled together" is a cynical way of putting it. it's more like an unbreakable bond that makes both people better. 6. the hard part is telling the truth. and the truth is generally a horrible thing. it's easy to tell the truth when everyone wants to hear what you have to say. it's very difficult when no one wants to hear it, least of all yourself. 7. you're braiding one rope. you have the strands of your life, your partner has theirs, and you tie them together into something stronger. then you undertake massive adventures. a household. joint careers. each other's mental and physical health. kids. all of it very, very challenging. 8. marriage and child rearing get a bad rap in our culture and he thinks that's a catastrophe. even if you're highly career oriented, that's two thirds of your life. his house has been a sanctuary, and that's part of why he's been effective at work. 9. and it decides your second half. he's 55. both his kids just got engaged in the same month. he might have 40 more years, and now there are grandchildren coming. all that negotiating early is what buys you something to advance into.

Jordan Peterson breaks down how to shut off social anxiety the moment you walk in: "You go to a party, your heart's beating. Why? The party is a monster. Why? Because it's judging you. It's putting you low down the dominance hierarchy, because that's what a negative judgment is" "That interferes with your sexual success, and that means you're being harshly evaluated by nature itself. So you're confronting the dragon of chaos when you go into the social situation" "And what do you do? You hunch over, and that's low dominance. I'm no threat. Well, that's not going to get you very far. But it's a logical thing to do in the face of a tyrant. You look at the king and you're dead. I'm no threat, I'm hunched over" "And then what's happening internally? What are people thinking about me? Am I looking stupid? Am I looking foolish? I'm awkward. I hate being here. I'm sweating too much. It's all internalized, it's all self-focused" "You can't tell someone to stop thinking about something, because they get caught in the loop. It's like don't think of a white elephant. White elephant, white elephant, white elephant" "What you do with socially anxious people is you say, look at other people. Look at them. Because if you look at them, you can tell what they're thinking" "If you're ever speaking to a group of people, never speak to the group of people. That doesn't exist. You talk to individuals, and then they reflect for you the entire group, because they're all entrained. You look at one person and they broadcast you everyone's thinking" "As soon as you focus on the person, not you, you push your attention outward and you start watching. Well then all your automatic mechanisms kick in and you stop being awkward" "If we're talking and I'm looking over here, I don't know what you're going to do next, and I'm going to put disjunctions in, like bad chords in the melody of our conversation. And the reason is I'm not paying attention" "That's why the eye is the thing at the top of the pyramid. It's the thing that enables you to win the set of all possible dominance hierarchies"

Jordan Peterson on the trade-off between a great career and a good life: 1. you can get a long way by concentrating on nothing but your career. a minority of men do this. 70, 80 hours a week, flat out. they're staking everything on a small probability of exceptional status in one narrow domain. it works. it's also hard on them. no family, no leisure, no life outside the work. they get very one-dimensional. 2. that one-dimensionality might be the price of being exceptional. if you want to be a genius level mathematician, or a scientist at the top, you're in the lab all the time. smart, dedicated, narrow. that's how you beat everyone else doing the same thing. it may be the only way. if you love it, more power to you. but you're going to pay for it. 3. the math is additive and brutal. if i'm smart and hardworking and i crank out 70 hours a week, and you do 30, in two years i'm so far ahead of you that you will never catch up. 4. jung thought men go after perfection and women go after wholeness. perfection is stake it all on one thing and look for radical success. wholeness asks a different question. do you want one thing in your life at 150 percent, or five things at 80 percent? there is a lot more richness in the five. 5. a family. something meaningful outside of work. a network of friends. those three or four things alone are plenty to keep you oriented. and if one of them collapses, everything doesn't go. the price is that the more you optimize the balance, the less likely you are to be fantastically successful at any single one. considered across a whole life, that might still be the winning strategy. 6. most women bail out of unidimensional careers in their 30s. they won't put in the 80 hours it takes to dominate a field. they decide it isn't worth it, and no wonder. two things drive it. socioeconomic status makes a man more attractive on the mating market and does not do the same for a woman. and a woman's timeframe is compressed. a guy can say he'll have kids later until he's 80. she can't. 7. one in three couples over 30 has fertility problems. defined as not conceiving after a year of trying. one in three. wanting children and not getting them is one of the common routes to extreme unhappiness, and if it happens to you, you're in the medical mill for ten years. worth thinking about before it's the thing you're thinking about.

Jordan peterson on the one thing women everywhere look for in men: 1. Across every culture on earth, women go for men who are older and of higher status. about four to five years older on average. it holds worldwide. the gap shrinks a little in rich countries, because there it's easier to stand on your own feet. men don't do the reverse. a man's pick mostly ignores the woman's status. 2. But it was never really about money or age. those are stand-ins. what women are actually reading is health. if you're healthy and full of energy, you're far more likely to succeed at anything. it's very hard to win when you're sick. so status is just a signal that the body underneath is working. 3. And we read health without knowing we're doing it. symmetry is one marker. the more symmetrical a face or body, the healthier the person tends to be. butterflies do the same thing. a butterfly won't mate with another if it's off-balance by the tiniest amount you can imagine. 4. The body sends signals you never agreed to send. shoulder width compared to waist. this ratio get read in an instant. it happens below the surface, but it's happening constantly. 5. Here's the twist. most animals compete on size. with elephant seals, the males are giant and keep harems, and the biggest one wins. humans went another way. women started selecting for intelligence and reliability instead of raw power. men raced to keep up. and that arms race is part of what grew the human brain.
