On the thousands of ISIS militants held in prisons in NE Syria: Remember that the US partnering with the YPG (later SDF) started in a real way during the battle for Kobani, at which point the Americans could no longer hide that Turkey was supporting ISIS (though they still did deny it). Turkey wasn't a reliable partner in fighting ISIS, which shouldn't be something that has to be pointed out; the foreign jihadis landed at Turkish airports and freely crossed the Turkish border. Jihadis could pass back and forth as needed for supplies, weapons, medical treatment...ISIS even launched an attack on the Kobani border gate from inside Turkey. But America is not and has not been earnestly invested in fighting ISIS since the defeat of its caliphate. The 7 years of ISIS whack-a-mole since gave the US an excuse to maintain a presence in Syria. That pretense is no longer necessary. It might become necessary again, and there will be plenty of ISIS flourishing if and when that time comes. So if it seems like the very serious matter of dangerous terrorists being unleashed on the region is being somewhat ignored by the Western powers responsible for engineering the Syria mess, that's because it is. But when you have a government comprised of a former Al-Qaeda affiliate with a healthy dose of former ISIS and extremist foreign militants in the mix, what difference does 10kish freed ISIS prisoners make? And that’s not accounting for the many boys and adolescents who have become men in the mini-caliphate of the al-Hol camp, yet another time bomb the Americans hoisted on the SDF.
