I have just watched Michelle O’Neill and Mary Lou McDonald from Sinn Fein outside the High Court in Belfast this evening. This is a time for calm heads, not political rants. This is a time to show leadership, not to wind up the community. I have been appalled to see those who have decided to ramp up tensions, and dial up the rhetoric throughout today including senior Sinn Fein representatives on the decision by the Parades Commission to grant a very modest walk on the Garvaghy Road at 8am on Sunday morning. Michelle O’Neill should be dialling down the temperature, not giving stump speeches. Regardless if someone agrees with the decision or not, all should be calming things down. The behaviour of Sinn Fein at the very prospect of 35 men walking down a road at 8am on a Sunday morning, a parade that would take just moments to pass any point, says all you need to know about a “shared Ireland”. The Portadown Orangemen have made clear there is absolutely no threat nor violence. There is nothing to fear from them and absolutely nothing to be apprehensive about. Sinn Fein need to dial the anti-Unionist, anti-British sentiment and show leadership and encourage calm.

I will never allow the position of First Minister to be used, misused or to be weaponised in a way to push for the abolition of Northern Ireland. At a time when people are focused on waiting lists, challenges within health, education and our roads - where is Michelle O’Neill? Pursuing narrow political priorities over what matters to most people.

I believe in building a brighter future for everyone in Northern Ireland. Yes, we can and do face difficult issues, but that should always be done responsibly. It should always be done democratically and lawfully. I have been appalled by the behaviour of political nationalism that has disregarded duty and responsibility and has focused on shoring up their base and playing to the crowd. The people of Northern Ireland deserve leadership. It is simply not acceptable that some think there is one rule for them and one rule for everything else. Support to a community or cause should never include unlawful behaviour or participating in defying the law - it should never include encouraging others to do so. People the length and breath of the Northern Ireland are rightly angry at the behaviour of Michelle O’Neill. It is simply unacceptable. Michelle O’Neill should not be running from her ministerial responsibilities or from the scrutiny of our democratic institutions. Upholding the law and equality of the law are absolutely key to our institutions. I will always stand up against what is wrong - no matter the slurs or attacks. The hatred from the Sinn Fein benches is palpable. We should all be doing our duties, while urging peaceful and lawful solutions.

Once again, national defence is now one of the biggest issues facing the UK and indeed the globe. Threats are high, and the focus is on national resilience, investing in our defence capabilities, resilience and readiness and in building defence and security for the future. The defence of her citizens is one of the absolute key responsibilities of any nation and country. No one should underestimate the current state of risk and threat. Northern Ireland stands ready to continue to play our part - and it is good to see shipbuilding returning to Belfast including for the defence of our Nation. It was great to get the opportunity to welcome HMS Queen Elizabeth and her crew to Belfast - and great too to see the Royal Navy bring her into Belfast Harbour! What a ship! #warship

For far too long working parents have been disadvantaged in trying to secure a pre-school nursery place of their choosing. This is because the criteria meant that children with a parent on benefits got preference for that place. This is fundamentally unfair. There are enough pre-school nursery places for every child, yet parents under pressure of school drop off and trying to get to work for a certain time were actually discriminated against and disadvantage JUST because they work. I have had many parents contact me frustrated by this, as have my colleagues so I am incredibly pleased that my DUP colleague, the Education Minister has been able to get this criteria changed and announced today. Hard working parents should be supported, not discriminated against. #DUPDelivery

The National Police Memorial Service is being held in Belfast today, paying tribute to those who paid the ultimate price for defending the rule of law. At the same time nationalists in Northern Ireland are participating in an unlawful protest and blocking a road. Ministers are in breach of their pledge of office. That stands in stark contrast to the dignity and patience displayed by Portadown District who have a lawful determination that they should be allowed to walk along the Garvaghy Road. The rule of law must be upheld however long that takes.

What was the role of the British Army in Northern Ireland? One of bravery, of sacrifice and of defending so many in the most difficult of times. What an example this evening as we marked the 55th Anniversary of the murder of Captain David Stewardson, aged 29 of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps by terrorists on the 9th September 1971 Captain Stewardson was a bomb disposal team member and was killed by an IRA terrorist bomb, he was attempting to defuse the bomb when it exploded outside Castlerobin Orange hall. Capt Stewardson had been in Northern Ireland for only 10 days. As Capt. Stewardson tried to cut into the package, the bomb exploded. This type of bomb was a new development and was christened by the bomb disposal teams as a "Castlerobin". Capt Stewardson wasn’t the only bomb disposal solider killed - there were 23 during Operation Banner, all killed trying to protect others. We should always remember their sacrifice, and never allow it to be besmirched.

Sinn Fein out attacking the DUP AGAIN...!! Surprise, surprise! A positive visit to Carryduff on one of the Executive agreed transformation projects just announced - EPharmacy - this will transform prescriptions and other services including introducing e-perscriptions. Back in the car to see Sinn Fein attacks...again! 🙄... Let's be clear - we are being asked to agree proposals in the Executive. That WILL mean scrutiny and I will take the time to do that. The Sinn Fein Minister sat on this in the Department for 2 and a half years, we have had it a few weeks. I will always discharge my duty to scrutinise and ask questions on proposals. I have a meeting set up on Monday with Economy officials - the Sinn Fein Minister is aware of that. The big question for Sinn Fein to answer is why there is not a single business out in support of this bill?

UPDATE - Violence serves no purpose. Tonight many 100s of people came out to partake in peaceful protest. They then dispersed having registered their deeply held concern and anger. What we are seeing now is pockets of disorder. Violence serves no purpose. It only damages the very cause and issues and people want to get heard. I know people are angry. I know people want to register their concerns. However, violence only destroys and damages our communities and areas. Thuggery and violence is always wrong. I appeal to all - get home, stay peaceful and stay safe. I have also been speaking with the Chief Constable and those PSNI officers on the ground. They are taking significant footage and information and there will be prosecutions over the next number of days. Get home and stay away from the trouble.

That's me home from Day 3 of the show! It has been fantastic speaking to so many of you! Reflecting too on this "manufactured row" Sinn Fein are trying to get going, targeting Gordon Lyons in particular. Not for the first time! Gordon has made clear the place names project decision did not come anywhere near him. Maybe a bit of deflection and distraction by Sinn Fein because of a lack of delivery in their departments but, but who knows! The DUP will continue to drive forward with delivery 👇👇👇
