Since I’m already here in the Outro: Tear hole and have been for about 12 hours now. I may as well use this opportunity to point out one of the very distinct reasons Outro: Tear evokes such visceral reactions from all us who hear it. The meaning behind it is defintely one of the reasons. But another is the structure of the song itself. Outro: Tear is not one song with 3 verses saying the same thing. It’s 3 different reactions changing hands as the song moves from Namjoon to Yoongi to Hoseok. And along with the lyrics, the melody is doing the same thing. It’s weaving from Namjoon’s conflict to Yoongi’s despair to Hoseok’s fear. It’s 3 different reactions in response to the same inevitable end. Namjoon’s reaction being internal interrogation of his self. His relationship with identity has always been threaded through questions of sincerity. Kim Namjoon vs RM. Leader vs person. The person carrying everybody versus the person who is also exhausted and frightened and occasionally has absolutely no idea what he’s doing. It’s inward conflict. Was it real? Was the goodbye always inevitable because of his own insincerity him? Then yoongi comes in with his verse that says, fine. Destroy it. His reaction is pure rage. And it’s not rage at the people who are important to him. No. It’s rage at the fact it has come to this. So he wants it all scorched. Bc if all of it has to go, then he wants it gone completely. No lingering. No halves. No hope. And then Hoseok’s verse. His whole verse is grappling with fear through his words. But it’s also fear as a physiological language. It’s one of the truly unique things about his verse. How the melody literally starts with hard breaths. You can hear it in the song. Gasping. Forcing. Almost choking. And then his flow breaks out of its contained rhythm. He’s panicking. He’s fearful bc “ending” was always just a concept. But now it’s here in present time. He spends the final verse driving his body and the song towards a state that feels increasingly unsustainable. The breaths are shorter, his delivery gets more frantic, rhythm breaking out of confinement, and then his repetitions like geol geol geol and byeong byeong byeong lose structure within the song and becomes a fixation almost. So now you as the listener who has been experiencing that transition from conflict to rage and despair and now to fear and panic, you are naturally expecting a sort of resolve. But it doesn’t happen. What does happen is the song quite literally cuts. The composition of the flow itself finally does what it’s meant to do. It ends without allowing for a resolve. That part. That abrupt end. That is why Outro: Tear has that reaction on us all. Because the very last thing you experience with the song is an interruption. All of that confusion and pain and rage and fear carries with you into Hoseok’s verse where as the panic crescendos, you expect him to arrive emotionally somewhere. But he doesn’t. He is still inside the panic when the song takes him away from you. So now you’re the one left holding all of that with you. That’s what’s almost cruel about the song itself. There’s no completion. Hoseok’s verse just escalates and escalates and then cuts. That’s it. You don’t get closure. You don’t get the emotional luxury of watching the pain taper away. The songs just rips from you.

You can clearly see Hobi’s mic failing at the beginning of FYA so he gives it to the staff and he basically just vibes mic-less but the part that stands out is you can see Hobi doing some quick decision making bc his verse is coming up.. you can see he contemplates Namjoon for a second but Namjoon is still rapping so with an immediate game plan he skips towards Jin. Jin, who didn’t need anything beyond a brief gesture from Hobi hands his mic over. No fuss, no show of technical issues. They just keep the segment moving as if it was some spontaneous choreo, Jin hyping hobi. Hobi still is without a mic at the thrust stage but again doesn’t make it a thing. He hypes the crowd. Throws water. Dances. Gets his white mic, goes back to singing like nothing. And then you have sweet Jin asking if hobi needs his mic despite the line following yoongi’s verse is his own. Complete, raw teamwork and camaraderie. Gorgeous right?? The way it was seamless unless you were watching and paying attention to the details. Bc otherwise, no one would’ve known. That’s showmanship. That’s 2seok’s 13 years of practicing and performing together. That’s Hoseok’s professionalism running through his veins as naturally as blood. And that’s Bangtan’s diligence and discipline instilled in them from day 1. They’ve never been the kind to let anything hinder them from giving their all. Not injuries. Not wardrobe mishaps. Not even technical hiccups. That’s BTS.

Don’t think about the fact that when Outro: Tear was written, it was for the members. It was written in contemplation of whether they should quit or not. Don’t think about the fact that it was during a time when they were being faced with such physical, mental and emotional burnout from extreme stress and pressure. Don’t think about how the lyrics of Tear are meant to counterpart the metaphorical embodiment of the mirror between tears shed from sorrow and grief of something ending and the physical act of tearing or ripping something apart. Don’t think about how rapline’s individual verses speak of their fears and internal struggles in coming to terms with how they are coping with the distraught of the inevitable end of something they thought was forever, something they were heading towards together, something that was their dream that is now destroying them. Don’t think about Namjoon’s raw conflict with the illusion of forever when he sings:- “Goodbye that ended up coming to me is what I deserve at the end of my playacting full of lies” Or “Forever, stop saying things like forever Theres gotta be an end anyway” Don’t think about Namjoon’s ever present conflict with the mask he wears, wondering if people would still love him the same if they saw the bare face that only he knows behind the illusion. Wondering if that goodbye was what he deserved after all since he’s not been sincere, always hiding behind something. If forever is really forever when an end was always coming for him. Don’t think about Yoongi’s verse of burning rage and despair when he sings:- “Slowly cut out my heart, yeah yeah squeeze with your foot the broken pieces of my heart so that my lingering feeling don’t remain anymore” Or “I hope you kill me quickly without hesitation, yeah yeah burn it so that even the burnt ash doesn’t remain” Don’t think about how it is actually Yoongi’s demand of a clean break. To rip his heart apart, doesn’t matter how deep it goes. Rip it. Burn it. Torch it. Don’t hesitate. He’s saying if this beautiful thing needs to end then he wants it to end completely, so that even the hope of possibly putting all the pieces back together are gone. Don’t think about Hoseok’s verse that serves as the final climax to the visceral pain and heartbreak in his chest when he sings:- “At the moment a word comes out of your mouth, at the moment where focus becomes irregular, at the moment where everything is in danger ” Or “From now on I’m with incurable disease of parting, you’re my beginning and end, that is all, my meeting my parting, that was all, from now on fear will repeat itself, caused by you, tear, tear” Don’t think about Hoseok’s delivery of his lines here. How at a certain point, he stops singing it. He is screaming it. “I should not have shed tears I should not have torn it off.” He is hyperventilating it. The pain is too much and it’s affecting him. The way he’s basically crying saying what once was his salvation, his beginning, is now his weapon. His end. How goodbye was just a moment but now it’s here. This inevitability of parting that was always gonna be the price he pays for loving you. This is his end. This is his fear. And it’s because of you. This is his tear. As in rip. Just don’t think about any of it. At all.

I genuinely feel like those at the venue realised it was Jungkook and hobi a little later than us who were watching at home 😭 like they really fooled everyone. Obviously bc of the main camera zooming out during livestream. But most fancams I’ve seen, there’s a delayed freak out 🤣 it’s adorable
