This was my favorite part of stream today! I am gonna write a little bit more here about this, forgive me. As my brother noted, the story of Hanukkah is not really the most important Jewish story, but it does have something to teach us. Hanukkah celebrates the Maccabean revolt, a successful rebellion against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. It’s a story of resistance and reclaiming religious freedom. But the history doesn’t end there. The Maccabees, who fought for liberation, later established the Hasmonean dynasty—a period marked by extreme violence, forced conversions, and internal oppression of those who deviated from their vision of Jewish law. This complicated legacy resonates today in discussions of power and justice, especially in the context of Israel/Palestine. The cycle of the oppressed becoming oppressors challenges us to think critically about what liberation truly means and how we can break cycles of violence. Hanukkah, then, is not just a celebration of resistance—it’s a call to reckon with the responsibilities that come with power. It is a blessing to have good and kind friends who care about people. I know that these are the only kind of people who can help bring into being a world where Palestine is free. I wish you and your family a safe and rejuvenating holiday.
