Sweet 2-throw sequence from Brock Purdy including a no-looker 👀 at today's 49ers practice: 🏈 Absolutely perfect deep toss to De'Zhaun Stribling on a corner. The rookie caught the ball with Jack Jones and Marques Sigle very close, but Purdy couldn't have run up and handed the ball to him in a better spot. Hit Stribling's hands like a pillow, making no noise (I was standing very close, only a few yards away). Smooth 🏈 Purdy then made a no-look pass, a 3/4 release completion to KhaDarel Hodge down the seam while looking toward Stribling in a different direction

Today seemed, IMO, to be a significant statement practice for Jacob Cowing. He grabbed one of Brock Purdy's numerous (perfect) deep passes but it goes deeper than that. HIGHLIGHTS: 🏈A few minutes earlier, Cowing and Marques Sigle collided on a deep corner attempt. Cowing was down for a while and limped off — it even looked like his day might be over. But Cowing returned and made the best catch I've seen from him in a 49ers uniform on a 40-yard laser over the middle. The resilience there definitely counts for something, especially considering Cowing's early-career availability issues 🏈Nick Bosa sighting! Did some running on the field while the 49ers were practicing for the first time in a couple weeks. Looked good. CMC (tightness) later watched team drills in person 🏈Keion White (adductor) popped the sled during practice, a good sign of progress 🏈Purdy's top-notch camp continues. He's driving the ball, he's layering the ball, he's hitting deep shots, he's been money on the gimmes, and he's escaping when needed. Many crisp connections between Purdy and the Mike Evans/De'Zhaun Stribling duo — #15 caught a TD vs Deommodore Lenoir 🏈Will Cowing be the 49ers' top punt returner? He caught several reps today. Notably, Jordan Watkins — coming off a very good showing in the preseason opener at WR — muffed one and was upset about it 🏈D-linemen CJ West and Titus Leo both left practice early with injuries 🏈Best 1-on-1 work of rookie OT Enrique Cruz Jr.'s young career came today. Held up well vs Ogbo Okoronkwo and Xavier Thomas. Progress! 🏈Rookie WR Will Pauling catch a nice red-zone TD from Jones, beating Jack Jones in coverage 🏈Rookie DT James Thompson Jr. remains an active presence. Good run stop today. Also had rookie LB Jaden Dugger with a run stop. Tall young LBs, including Larry Worth, continue getting good shine 🏈George Kittle said he's hitting top speeds and has a chance to play Week 1. He praised TE Luke Farrell's growth within the offense in Year 2 — thinks he'll have a big year (Farrell caught a couple more passes today) 🏈Klay Kubiak doesn't believe QB Kurtis Rourke's rib injury will keep him out for a long time. Kubiak said the 49ers deemed Rourke to be better than a 7th-round talent but think he was still available there because of the ACL tear he played through in 2024 🏈This was Malik Turner's most productive offensive practice. Caught a deep one from Purdy vs Upton Stout and also a TD from Mac Jones on a play fake earlier 🏈Jones to Deebo on a rainbow deep pass: Nice play 🏈Final play of practice — the last camp session with fans at the 49ers' facility this year — went to the defense. Very nice Upton Stout PBU against Stribling in the end zone The 49ers will travel to LA tomorrow and conduct a joint practice with the Chargers Tuesday. Brock Purdy … Justin Herbert Mac Jones … Trey Lance Kyle Shanahan … Jim Harbaugh Klay Kubiak … Mike McDaniel Good work coming!

The 49ers just finished their first 2-block practice with pads... 🏈Pass game looked sharp — until today. Perhaps some of the WR tumult hurt the operation. Ricky Pearsall is obviously done and the 49ers held De'Zhaun Stribling out Saturday for precautionary purposes 🏈CMC appears to be aging in reverse, possibly a testament to the distance he's getting from the 2024 Achilles tendinitis. He's had a ton of juice and ripped another long cutback run today 🏈LG will be a concern until it's not. So far in 1-on-1s, Brett Toth has seen more pass-protecting success than Connor Colby and Robert Jones, both of whom will need to improve there to allow the 49ers to breathe easier. But the 49ers prefer for Toth to be a backup center who isn't exposed to injury at the same time as Jake Brendel. Maybe he'll be a "break glass in case of emergency" option 🏈The much-hyped new looks of Raheem Morris' defense are a real thing — the 49ers have indeed expanded their repertoire both in terms of fronts and coverages. Their DBs made a lot of plays Saturday — PBUs for Lenoir, Green, and Stout 🏈On that note, Ji'Ayir Brown does seem to be winning favor as a Morris "guy". The DC specifically mentioned Brown today as he was rattling off names of supposed defensive pillars. Would be surprising if Brown isn't a Week 1 starter, IMO 🏈The DE injury concern is real, if only for the 49ers to conduct a proper training camp that includes two joint practices with the Titans and Chargers. They need more bodies there now and they were interested in adding one more vet even before the latest hardships. Jadeveon Clowney and Kyle Van Noy are both still available. Joey Bosa also technically is, but it seems that (if he isn't retiring) he wants to take the Eric Kendricks route of chilling now and signing later. Keep an eye on 49ers' workouts and signings at DE to get through the current storm. Maybe they sign a placeholder or two now and a more recognizable name later? We will see 🏈Deebo Day was fun. Of note that the 49ers wanted him even before Pearsall went down. So they've added — at the very, very least — a return man like they did with Skyy Moore last year, but with way more offensive upside

49ers training camp practice #2 is in the books. Here are some of the highlights: 🏈De'Zhaun Stribling is getting OPEN — catch-and-run house call from Mac Jones with those long 4.36 strides... The rookie also created separation down the seam on a ball Purdy overshot. Stribling caught a nice one from Purdy on an early rollout 🏈New CB Jack Jones has looked spry, but Ricky Pearsall cooked him on a double move — Jones misfired but that was some "wow" separation. Purdy later hit Pearsall for what might've been a catch-and-run TD 🏈Excellent Renardo Green leaping PBU 🏈CMC has a lot of juice to begin this camp. Jordan James got most of the work behind him early in this practice, but the back half featured more of rookie Kaelon Black. He had a muscle-on-muscle collision with Marques Sigle early 🏈Ji'Ayir Brown notched an acrobatic diving INT off a shorter pass from Purdy, who bounced back immediately with a chunk gainer to Mike Evans. Even with Christian Kirk (calf strain) sideline, the 49ers' WR corps already looks worlds ahead of last season's 🏈Vet CB Eli Apple, entering Year 11, notched a pick 6 off Kurtis Rourke on a pass intended for Junior Bergen. Rourke rebounded with a nice seam shot to Jordan Watkins for a long gain, and then Rourke and Bergen bounced back with a long TD connection to end practice that fired up the onlooking first teamers 🏈Fred Warner looks like Fred Warner. Whenever he makes a nice stop near the media, Warner pretends to tweet with his thumbs to ensure his nice plays are noted 🏈Trent Williams, who just turned 38, is much more buoyant than I remember from previous camps. He's often throwing and catching the football in between reps and even jokingly running and cutting with the ball 🏈Another Kyle Shanahan cameo

49ers just wrapped up Block 2 of camp with a reminder of how good Brock Purdy is — even without his top 3 WR (Evans/Stribling injuries are NOT serious), Purdy's offense managed some crisp success: 🏈Demarcus Robinson was Purdy's favorite WR, reminiscent of when 49ers beat Philly with a skeleton crew. The deep out was the duo's bread and better 🏈Best play: Excellent one-handed catch from TE Brayden Willis on a corner route from Mac Jones. 🏈Deommodore Lenoir had two more PBUs — including one on a Purdy-Robinson deep out. CB1 been very active this camp and said this morning on KNBR that he's as locked in as ever 🏈6-3 rookie CB Ephesians Prysock notched a nice reaching PBU vs 5-9 Junior Bergen. 🏈Speaking of Bergen, he's making quite a few plays on offense and I wouldn't be quick to discount him in the punt return battle. FWIW, Bergen has made more offensive plays than Jacob Cowing, with whom he may be in a battle for a 53-man spot 🏈49ers did some red-zone work today where safety Ji'Ayir Brown had a nice, athletic PBU in the corner against TE Jake Tonges. Jordan Watkins later caught a TD from Jones in the corner 🏈New RB Khalil Herbert is wearing No. 40. He dished out some real contact on his first run — at 212 but just 5-9, Herbert is not a player defenders enjoy running in to. He'll be in the KR mix alongside Deebo Samuel — "hell yeah, let's go!" was Boyer's reaction to the Deebo signing 🏈LB Nick Martin dropped what should've been an easy INT from Kurtis Rourke, but he was in correct position. Later he made a nice stop on a Kyle Juszczyk catch 🏈Team drills started with a nice CMC run (he's had a handful already). And yes, as I've stated already and will discuss more, rookie Jaden Dugger worked with the thinned-out DE group for the first time. He did notch a would-be sack. A lot to unpack when it comes to his talent and that move as the 49ers navigate the dog days. More soon...

49ers - Chargers in the books. What a treat that practice was. Harbaugh, Shanahan, Purdy, Herbert and so much more... Highlights and *context*: 🏈49ers defense obviously needs Nick Bosa, but thankfully do they have Osa. SF struggled to set edges early; that led to some big Keaton Mitchell runs and play-action success for Herbert and Co. — including wide-open David Njoku TD and a Quentin Johnson TD vs Deommodore Lenoir 🏈That said, some of the deep-ball highlight clips (like Herbert to Brenen Thompson over Ji'Ayir Brown) floating online would've been Odighizuwa sacks. He lived in LA's backfield — but couldn't touch Herbert since it was practice 🏈Kaelon Black is back and has **impressive** burst. Immediately noticed the difference between him and 49ers' backup RBs of recent practices. Black also looks stronger than 208 pounds — that's a lot of muscle moving at a high rate of speed 🏈In red zone, 49ers QB Adrian Martinez hit Black on an angle route for a TD 🏈De'Zhaun Stribling made a sweet TD grab on a jump-ball fade from Mac Jones in RZ, although the 49ers saw relatively limited success there. They still have all the makings of a very good RZ team. "Hell yeah, Stribbles!" yelled a 49ers' O-linemen 🏈Jones threw an INT to LA CB Eric Rogers earlier. Pass was intended for 49ers WR Jordan Watkins, who was outmuscled by the 6-2 Rogers. Watkins later couldn't hold onto a desperation RZ heave from Purdy in the end zone that certainly gave him a chance 🏈In general, Jones has not been overly accurate this camp, but there were also misfires last year at this time. The guy proved himself as a gamer last season and the 49ers aren't worried 🏈Treated to a few Trent Williams vs Khalil Mack reps. Walking Hall of Famers 🏈Sweet run stuff from 49ers LB Garret Wallow, whom Fred Warner praised heavily, against LA RB Jarret Patterson 🏈49ers offense started hot but finished worse once practice graduated to move-the-ball sessions. Opposite was generally true on the other side, where the 49ers defense started better asserting itself later — included a Fred Warner punch out of Njoku 🏈Chargers DE Andre Carter II, who worked out for the 49ers a couple weeks ago, ripped past SF rookie LT Enrique Cruz Jr. on a RZ rep. Williams helped coached Cruz up a few minutes later 🏈Rookie 49ers DT James Thompson Jr. had an awesome swim move vs LA LG Jake Slaughter. The 6-6 Thompson's stock seems to rise on a daily basis. Fellow rookie DT Bryson Eason, a much wider/stouter frame, also held his ground well vs the run 🏈Early on was a trial-by-fire day for 49ers rookie CB Ephesians Prysock, who was beaten a couple times downfield by Brenen Thompson 🏈No music at practice today so hilarious to listen to Mike Evans lobbying the officials like a truly seasoned HOF-bound vet. Evans left practice early with a wrap around his quad but Shanahan said it was just precautionary 🏈Mike Shanahan in attendance for this practice 🏈Did Jim Harbaugh ever get to meet Brock Purdy? Let's end on that cliffhanger...

Fight AND practice highlights of that 49ers-Titans joint session.... 🏈 Brock Purdy was dominant facing a familiar Robert Saleh defense. 13 has been locked in all camp. Especially good in the red zone, where he found Deebo for multiple TDs and again connected with Luke Farrell (growing theme) 🏈Bullying vibe, especially early, from the 49ers defense. Tennessee took exception, hence the fights. A first-play Upton Stout shove and a second-play Dre Greenlaw/Fred Warner TFL on a pitch right set a very physical tone. Then, after Renardo Green leveled Carnell Tate, matters exploded 🏈Two Titans' O-linemen eventually ejected. Skirmish activity extended into back half of practice after 49ers DT Osa Odighizuwa sacked Cam Ward and grabbed his shoulder pad. Tennessee didn't like that 🏈Titans seemed to have some rushing success vs 49ers, though it's very hard to gauge without watching the tape. Ward's accuracy was very inconsistent. Lowlight for him was Ji'Ayir Brown's pick 6, which followed the Osa vs. Dan Moore Jr. Round II 🏈Big picture on 49ers offense: They'll need to be a top-5 unit this year, and Purdy has given every indication that he can guide that type of success from his QB spot. Layered passes, scrambles, elite RZ production... all there 🏈49ers vet DB Nate Hobbs was very active and physical for the 49ers today... seemed to be at the center of much of the action 🏈49ers safety Marques Sigle notched a couple PBUs 🏈Second-year corner Jakob Robinson logged a leaping INT against Titans QB Will Levis. It was intended for WR Mason Kinsev, who seemed to be doing a lot of today's jawing — including one session vs 49ers rookie safety Jalen Stroman 🏈I found Levis throwing a pick with Levi's Stadium in the background was funny 🏈One good red-zone rep for the 49ers involved rookie LBs Jaden Dugger and Larry Worth — nearly 14 feet of combined wingspan between them — flush Levis out of the pocket and force an incompletion. Was an imposing sight; Worth was FIRED UP 🏈Romello Height had some good, explosive work against Moore — a starting LT — that disrupted Ward. A lot of emotion in this one; Height was fired up on the sideline. Offsides flags still a concern 🏈Warner is a strategic instigator — talked quite a bit in Ward's direction in between series🍿. Also a good face-to-face confrontation with the much shorter RB Tyjae Spears 🏈Raheem Morris blitzed Warner numerous times today. The most I can remember Warner being asked to go straight after the QB. Another data point in evaluating this evolving 49ers' defense 🏈Former Stanford WR Elic Ayomanor had some good battles vs 49ers CBs Renardo Green (great coverage on a deep ball) and Jack Jones. Ayomanor beat Jones on a double move but Jones recovered for a last-second PBU 🏈Next up: Preseason opener vs these same Titans. Robert Saleh said Tennessee will play everyone and Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers will sit most starters. All in all, coaches happy with the productive work today. Good eval opportunity for the 49ers coming up in an actual game environment...
