One of the biggest differences between the book and The Return of the King is the Mouth of Sauron. In Tolkien’s book, the Mouth of Sauron isn’t a monstrous creature with a grotesque face. He’s a Black Númenórean - a descendant of the King’s Men of Númenor, the same people who fell under Sauron’s influence during the Second Age. He entered Sauron’s service while he was still young and eventually became the Dark Lord’s most trusted lieutenant. By the time of the War of the Ring, he had forgotten his own name. Sauron gave him a new identity: the Mouth of Sauron, because he spoke with his master’s authority and served as his chief emissary. When Aragorn and the Captains of the West arrive at the Black Gate, the Mouth of Sauron rides out under a flag of truce. Instead of fighting, he tries to break their spirit. He presents Frodo’s mithril shirt, Sam’s sword, and other belongings as “proof” that the Ring-bearer has been captured, hoping they’ll abandon all hope before the battle even begins. Peter Jackson kept the basic idea of the scene but completely redesigned the character. In the film, he’s portrayed as a hideously deformed figure with an oversized mouth, making him look more like a monster than a Black Númenórean. The movie also has Aragorn kill him on the spot, something that never happens in the book. In Tolkien’s version, the Mouth of Sauron survives the encounter and retreats behind the Black Gate after Gandalf exposes his lies and rejects Sauron’s terms.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the scene where Gandalf the White frees and heals Théoden from Saruman’s influence is entirely a creation of the films. In Tolkien’s story, Saruman never physically possessed Théoden. Instead, Gríma Wormtongue poisoned the king’s mind and manipulated him, driving him into a state of deep despair. As a linguist, Tolkien placed enormous importance on the power of words. As he frequently discussed in his letters, Saruman’s greatest power was not destructive magic, but his voice (the Voice of Saruman). Saruman’s voice had a hypnotic effect, allowing him to persuade people, cloud their judgment, and distort the truth. Gríma, in Edoras, essentially imitated Saruman’s “voice” and rhetoric, using it to weaken the king’s will and keep him under his influence. Tolkien presents a will that is surrendered willingly as something potentially more dangerous than magic imposed from the outside.

Billy Boyd is not only a talented actor but also a musician. Best known as Pippin Took in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he also wrote and performed “The Last Goodbye,” the closing song of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Written by Boyd alongside Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, the song plays over the end credits and became a fitting farewell to The Hobbit and the world of Middle-earth. It’s pretty special that the man who played Pippin also got to perform the final song of the Middle-earth films.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Extended Edition), Karl Urban's performance as Éomer, especially when he finds his sister Éowyn at the end of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, was absolutely incredible. Éomer, Believing his sister has been killed, he lets out a raw cry of grief and collapses beside her, a moment so powerful because, for a brief time, the audience shares his belief that she is truly gone. After all the triumph of defeating the Witch-king, the emotional cost of war suddenly comes crashing down. What makes this scene unforgettable is its authenticity. Éomer isn’t mourning a warrior or a hero, he’s mourning his last remaining family. His reaction reminds us that even in victory, war leaves behind unimaginable loss. It’s one of the most human moments in Tolkien’s story, capturing the pain, love, and sacrifice that make the Battle of the Pelennor Fields so emotionally devastating.

Tolkien wrote that Boromir was, at his core, a noble man whose moment of weakness came not from evil in his heart but from the Ring’s corrupting power. His fall was brief; he realized his failure at once and died in redemption, defending Merry and Pippin with courage and honor. Tolkien explained that Boromir’s death was meant to show both the weakness of Men before power and their capacity for repentance and noble self sacrifice. Aragorn’s final moment with him hearing his confession and accepting his honor. Becomes the point where Aragorn truly steps into leadership. Boromir’s death pushes him to claim Gondor’s future and fulfill his destiny.

Liv Tyler insisted that Viggo Mortensen be brought back to the set to film the coronation kiss in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. ❤️ During the final, hectic days of production, Mortensen had already finished his scenes and left the set. To save time, the crew planned to film Arwen’s close-up kiss using a stunt double. However, Tyler refused, arguing that this was her character’s most pivotal emotional moment and she wouldn't do it without her actual co-star. Her insistence forced the production to recall Mortensen, ensuring the genuine chemistry between the two actors was captured for the film's finale.

Did you know Galadriel’s gift to Aragorn is very different in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring? In Peter Jackson’s film, when it is Aragorn’s turn to receive a gift, Galadriel looks at the necklace he carries from Arwen and tells him that she has nothing greater to give him than the gift he already bears: Arwen’s love. She then speaks of Arwen’s choice to give up her immortality and remain in Middle-earth for Aragorn. Galadriel fears that by choosing a mortal life and the fate of Men, Arwen will gradually lose the grace and beauty of the Elves. Aragorn responds by saying that he wishes Arwen would leave these shores and sail to Valinor, where she could remain with her own people. It’s a brief but meaningful exchange that highlights the sacrifice behind Arwen’s choice. But in Tolkien’s book, this moment is completely different. Instead of speaking about Arwen’s necklace, Galadriel gives Aragorn the Elessar, the Elfstone, a great green stone set in a silver brooch shaped like an eagle. She explains that she had given it to her daughter Celebrían, who later passed it to Arwen, and now it comes to Aragorn as a token of hope.

Tolkien never explicitly pits Gandalf against Sauron in a direct power match-up. However, looking at the lore, both represent the absolute pinnacle of the Maiar in different ways. Gandalf (Olórin) is the wisest, while Sauron (Mairon) is the most naturally talented and powerful. But what if Gandalf took the One Ring? In Letter 246, Tolkien reveals a chilling truth: "If Gandalf had claimed the Ring, he would have remained righteous, but self-righteous. His good intentions would have been corrupted until he became worse than Sauron himself." Sauron’s evil is clear-cut, leaving a distinct line between good and bad. Gandalf, however, would enforce his own "goodness" and wisdom by absolute tyranny. Under Gandalf's rule, righteousness and pity would become tools of oppression. As Tolkien explicitly put it in his handwritten marginal note: "Thus while Sauron multiplied evil, he left 'good' clearly distinguishable from it. Gandalf would have made good detestable and seem evil." There's a reason why Gandalf was utterly terrified when Frodo offered him the Ring.

Aragorn chose the time of his own death at the age of 210, a gift granted to the Kings of Númenor. Rather than allowing his mind and body to slowly fade, he passed peacefully by his own will, ensuring that his son Eldarion could rule while still in his full strength. Arwen, devastated by the loss of her husband, had long chosen mortality for Aragorn’s sake. After his passing, she departed from Minas Tirith and returned to the now empty land of Lothlórien. There, consumed by grief and loneliness, she died of a broken heart, only one year after Aragorn’s death. Elves and Men go to completely different places after death. Elves remain within the world in the Halls of Mandos, while Men leave the world entirely. When an Elf and a Man marry, the Elf must choose mortality and accept the “Gift of Men” in order for their fates to remain united after death. If Arwen had remained an Elf, she and Aragorn would have been separated forever after his death.

In Ralph Bakshi's animated film The Lord of the Rings (1978), during the "Lament for Gandalf" scene, Aragorn tells Frodo that Gandalf is known by many names and explains why the Elves call him Mithrandir ("Grey Pilgrim") instead of Gandalf. In fact, very few people in Middle-earth know that Gandalf is actually a Maia. The vast majority of the Free Peoples - including Men, Dwarves, and most ordinary Elves - simply see him as an exceptionally powerful, ageless wizard or a wise old man. However, because Aragorn had known Gandalf since his own youth and was raised among the Elves, he is one of the few who knows Gandalf's true nature.
