🏛️ Beneath the Roman Forum lies one of Christianity’s most powerful hidden treasures: the Mamertine Prison. Over 2,600 years old, this is Rome’s oldest prison. Built in the 7th century BC (around 640–616 BC) by King Ancus Marcius as a cistern, it was later turned into a grim holding cell for Rome’s most dangerous enemies awaiting execution. According to ancient Christian tradition, Saints Peter and Paul were both imprisoned here before their martyrdom under Emperor Nero (c. 64–68 AD). Why here? It was the main state prison for high-profile threats to Roman power. The apostles’ “crime”? Refusing to worship the Emperor as a god. Legend tells that while chained in the damp lower dungeon (the Tullianum), St. Peter miraculously caused a spring of water to flow so he could baptize fellow prisoners and even their guards. Tradition holds that St. Paul wrote his final epistle, 2 Timothy, from this very prison during his second Roman imprisonment. Other letters may have been composed or finalized here or nearby. From this sacred spot, Peter was led to his upside-down crucifixion on Vatican Hill, and Paul to his beheading outside the city. For more than 1,300 years, pilgrims have descended these steps to pray where the two great Apostles of Christ spent their final days. It remains a place of profound reflection on faith, suffering, and ultimate triumph. A powerful reminder that light can shine even in the darkest places. My video, taken for you. The ancient bronze doors of St. John Lateran These massive doors — nearly 2,000 years old — once guarded the Curia Julia, the Roman Senate House in the Forum. Emperors like Domitian oversaw them; Julius Caesar himself may have walked through. Moved here in 1660 by Pope Alexander VII, they now welcome pilgrims into Rome’s Cathedral.
