I’ve been thinking a lot about the extraordinary outbursts of the President of the United States against female journalists... well, actually against journalists in general and journalism. But it feels like he saves his most childlike behavior and irrational language for female reporters, calling them all kinds of names that kids in kindergarten are given times out for. It’s stunning to me to witness such behavior from any leader, any CEO, any person of influence or importance. I’ve never witnessed someone like this raging, this weekend with Meet the Press host Kristen Welker, just last week in the Oval Office with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, calling women stupid or piggy, telling them to “smile”, calling them darling, demeaning their credibility. Every good man should denounce this behavior. Every person should be able to stand up for their colleagues and say “No more.” Imagine this man screaming like this at your daughter, your wife, your sister, your mother... would you stand for it? No, you wouldn’t! And neither should any of us. It’s unacceptable and undignified. Period. End of story.

I was grateful to see this video that Jim Acosta posted after the “Quiet, piggy” incident. That was followed by the president doing something similar to ABC News White House correspondent Mary Bruce, speaking to her in a way that was belittling, rude, and actually dehumanizing. In many respects, not only did he personally berate her, but then went on to talk about ABC News as fake. He then continued to dismiss the Khashoggi murder by saying “things happen” when he was asked about hosting the alleged mastermind of that murder in the White House, telling the press it was rude to bring up the incident. Having a free press is one of the most important parts of having a free society. It’s heartbreaking and maddening to watch the president of the United States degrade, dehumanize, and berate the press on a daily basis. I’m not saying the process is perfect. No institution is, and it’s made up of lots of different people, but to brand everything fake news to brand every reporter as incompetent and other such words is detrimental to having a free press that a free society can count on and can turn to for facts or the truth. I know everybody seems to be scared of this president’s wrath, of being called out by him, or being given one of his nicknames. But the president of the United States is supposed to be a person that brings out the best, that raises people up. It’s beyond belief to me as a journalist, as a woman, and as an American that this behavior is not called out by everyone who came to that White House dinner, who knows the importance of the press, and who cares about their fellow human beings. We don’t need to accept this behavior, nor should it be allowed to be normalized. Only if we keep calling it out, and I mean all of us, will it make a difference. #abovethenoise

In this week’s edition of M!, I talked about this summer being a summer of friendship, a summer of connection. So many people in our country are lonely, divided, and scared to reach out. Reaching out is hard. Reaching out takes courage. Reaching out takes vulnerability. That is what I think Hunter Biden is doing here. He’s very open and honest about his own life, the mistakes he’s made and wanting to own up to them, while also wanting to reach out to others who might have gone through the same type of thing. I think Hunter’s desire to talk and start a conversation about addiction, about recovery is wonderful. He acknowledges that not everybody will like it and that people might complain about it, but I’m glad that he acknowledges it. He’s also been met by a lot of love a lot of friendship. People need support in their lives. Life is tough for everyone, so when someone says, I’m here to start a conversation about mistakes I’ve made, about what I’ve learned about recovery, about addiction, I think it’s moving. It’s scary for them, and I’m sure scary for those who want to reach out and start that conversation with him, but in the spirit of this being the summer of friendship, the summer of connection, and in the spirit of moving forward and reaching across the divide, why not support someone who’s trying? In 2021, he shared that Adele had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 10 years earlier, and that while the disease had taken a lot away, “the need to dance hasn’t left her. She can’t speak. She can’t stand. She can’t feed herself. But when she sees me, there is always a smile. Still a smile. And there’s still a kiss. And there’s a sound which she makes when she sees me.
