Happy 63rd Birthday to actor Paul McCrane, whose death scene in RoboCop remains the greatest thing ever.

Unbelievably sad that Catherine O'Hara is no longer with us. Gone at 71, which is no age, really. Here's a wonderful old clip of her singing Kidnap the Sandy Claws from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), with partners in crime Danny Elfman and the late, great Paul Reubens. Lock, Shock and Barrel, together again at the Hollywood Bowl.

The greatest make-up effect is not so much a showy monster as it is a convincing old age make-up that no one even realises is a make-up. Most people watched The Exorcist (1973) believing Max von Sydow was in his seventies, though actually he was only 44. Hell of a magic trick!

RoboCop saves Pee-wee Herman from being murdered by ED-209 at the 1988 Academy Awards. Just another day in Hollywood!

It's no wonder Diane Keaton won an Oscar for Annie Hall. How is it even possible to play cool and dorky at the same time? She was awkward and adorable and it's so sad she's gone at 79. "Don't give up on yourself. So you make a mistake here and there; you do too much or you do too little. Just have fun. Smile. And keep putting on lipstick."

Remembering director Richard Donner, born today in 1930. Here's a wonderful video of other all-time greats singing his praises - watch till the end for Gene Hackman's legendary yarn! "I have a bust of Abraham Lincoln in my office. Not because of the greatness he did for our country, but because whenever I look at it, I have to remember an actor killed him."

Remembering the inimitable Mel Blanc - "The Man of 1000 Voices" - born today in 1908. Besides Bugs here, Blanc voiced fellow Looney Tunes legends Daffy, Porky, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Taz, Speedy, Wile E & more. Amazing!

Remembering Herbert Buckingham Khaury - aka Sir Timothy Timms, Larry Love the Singing Canary, and of course, Tiny Tim - born today in 1932. A genuinely strange soul who found fame with his freaky falsetto stylings, he lived life on his own peculiar terms and I really admire that.

Arguably more iconic, even, than Rick Baker's American Werewolf transformation sequence, Rob Bottin's Norris Spider Head from The Thing (1982) not only marks the pinnacle of practical make-up effects, but also it's perhaps the greatest WTF moment in cinema history.

Here's William Shatner on a higher plane than we'll ever reach, at the 1978 Science Fiction Film Awards. Happy 94th Birthday to the TV and real-life rocket man! 🚀 "We were basically one and the same, although Jim [Kirk] was just about perfect, and, of course, I am perfect."
