Paano naman kami? Seldom seen but always there, the musang—or Asian palm civet—emerges after dark to do its quiet work: eating fruits, dispersing seeds, and helping forests grow back. Here in Masungi, the musang has found refuge. Away from snares. Away from shrinking forests. Away from harm. But even this safe space is now at risk. Masungi Georeserve faces eviction and dismantling—not to save nature, but because of politics and private gain. If this sanctuary falls, so do the unseen lives it shelters. With Pasig City residents being some of the beneficiaries of a healthy watershed, Mayor Vico Sotto urges the DENR to dialogue and collaborate with the Masungi Georeserve Foundation. Mayor Vico and his team visited the project site in 2022 to see the state of the watershed and the work being done to address deforestation. According to studies by the WorldBank and flood modeling by the Manila Observatory, a reforested Upper Marikina Watershed will help decrease the flood extent and flood volume in Pasig and Marikina City, should another Typhoon Ondoy happen. The group also planted native Katmon trees as a reminder of their visit and a symbol of their commitment to conservation in the uplands.
