Found Bertha and her new calf in this clearing in the woods. When the cow leaves the herd it’s usually a good indicator she’s off to have the baby. And it looked like I found her just after, or very near her having delivered. He will be called Patrick.

This is Momma Hen and she is one of the oldest chickens we have on the farm. Each year she goes “broody” and hatches eggs we intend to keep for consumption. That’s okay because we get more hens each year without paying for any. She’s a bit quirky though - instead of keeping the chicks with the flocks, she moves them to this old coal chute built into the side of the house. This is where she’s raised them since they were first hatched. No heat lamps, weather protection by us or much else and the chicks are now growing into mature hens!

Bull is introduced to herd about three to five months after calf birth. Calf is with mother until day of processing. Mother cow is without calf nursing for a few months to prepare for next calf. Result is tender, delicious, rose colored beef.

Another reminder as temperatures across the country plummet - if you ave cold hardy livestock then providing supplemental heat is largely unnecessary and can be a significant danger to their health and safety.

I have never seen anything like this! The second sow broke out of the farrowing area, went and got a tarp, dragged it back to the run in, made a nest and has currently birthed six piglets.

Huge news for our garlic business. And I do mean this is unexpected. We will be selling multiple varieties of garlic in 2026. Positioning Cottage Pastures to be one of the few garlic farms in the United States - selling seed and culinary quality garlic nationwide. To date we have only sold hardneck Music garlic. Now we are looking at many varieties which are being planted between this weekend and next week. Unexpected. Big deal. This is exciting. Varieties that can be planted nationwide!

Is someone messing with our farm? Seriously - this is the second instance when the energizer has been affected to be made ineffective. Wire cut or on the ground but more importantly, the hot (energizing) connection is again removed from the battery. It was suspicious the first time. Now this is the second time.
