Flight from San Jose to LAX. Before the flight, the pilot warned of high winds and turbulence. He suspended all food and drink service before we took off. As we approached LAX, we could see the smoke from the #palisadesfire moving across the sky. This is what we saw as we flew through the smoke. 🙏 (Pardon the shakiness and scratched up window.)

Waiting in the cart park of TPC Scottsdale and I hear a familiar voice. This guy was going to the range to hit two bags of balls. Bare feet, sweats, as he loaded up his clubs and range balls, the cart attendant asked, “Last name on that account?” The man politely replies, “Mediate.” After 15 minutes of good-ol-fashioned eye-of-the-bullshitting, he was off to work on his game. Hard not to love Rocco…

Of all the discoveries I’ve made throughout 15 years of “Journeys” and “Away Games,” it’s Ardglass Golf Club, the course and the community, that I’ll never shake. A home away from home, I found it the day after the 2015 Irish Open Pro-Am. I had been out late, had no interest in being up early, but Marty Carr of Carr Golf insisted we rally and play what he considered “a hidden gem.” We hear it a lot, but in this case, it has never been more true. I’ve been back now, several times. Not far from Royal County Down (30 mins?), the course and community feels like a home away from home. Fitzy is the 11-time club champ and a prince of a person. So is Paul Vaughan. The Mulhall brothers—William, Ross and Caelan—have become friends. They owned the puppies that grew to be the Dire Wolves in Game of Thrones. And then there’s Aidan Mulloy—quite the craíc! Anyways, I hope you too get the chance to discover this magic land. A lot like Goat Hill Park, the leadership of Ardglass is pumping lots of profits into making it even more memorable than it was that day back in May of 2015.✌🏼

As Pasatiempo Golf Club puts final touches on the restoration of their front-nine greens, I had a chance to walk and talk with Justin Mandon, the superintendent. Lots more coming, but this project, their process, what Jim Urbina, Mandon, Earthsculptures and that membership has done here will be rightfully lauded and copied by clubs and courses for the foreseeable future. All 18 reopen to the public on Dec. 4. Back-nine work starts in April.

On Dec. 5th, they cut the first pin on Pasatiempo’s 16th green, recently restored by Jim Urbina, Justin Mandon and Earth Sculptures. On Dec. 19, Fire Pit Productions is hosting a Bonfire event for what was 44 two-person teams, but now we’re opening it up to 50 teams. Get a partner and get involved for one of the first rounds open to the public. For $650 per player, you get two meals, drinks, golf, a gift bag, trophies, live music and a roundtable with Urbina, Mandon and Brett Hochstein, an architect and shaper involved in the project. Sponsors include L.A.B. Golf, Dormie Workshop, Ashworth, FlagBag, Casa Maestri Tequila, Sweaty’s and Broccoli Country Club. Weather is looking good, course is mint and greens are insane. Lots more coming on Pasatiempo Golf Club’s restoration of their Dr. Alister Mackenzie original greens, but for now, here’s Jim Urbina at the end of episode one, breaking down the score at halftime of the 16th green, one of the most diabolical putting surfaces in golf. Looking forward to hosting a Bonfire event at Pasatiempo this Thursday when temperatures might get into the 70s. Course and greens are immaculate.
