Just a friendly reminder that NASA is building a nuclear-powered drone and sending it to Saturn’s moon Titan to search for the building blocks of life. Honored to have helped build the laser that will zap Titan samples for analysis by the onboard mass spectrometer (called DraMS). The actual spacecraft, a rotorcraft the size of a car, is being built by the legendary team at Johns Hopkins APL. It launches on a Falcon Heavy in July 2028, beginning a billion-mile journey to the outer Solar System. Mission of a lifetime.

You can now explore the entire US with 1-meter 3D LiDAR data! I rebuilt my USGS elevation viewer so you can search any address, zoom all the way into the terrain, and slide between LiDAR and satellite imagery. The detail is incredible. You can pick out riverbeds, ridgelines, old roads, drainage patterns, and terrain completely hidden by trees. Try it here and export your own animated GIF: Happy exploring!

The US has incredible topography! USGS recently released 1 m LiDAR elevation data covering the entire country, and their “3D Elevation as Art” series shows just how detailed it is. I used Astra/Codex to build an app where you can slide between the LiDAR elevation maps and optical imagery for every state. It’s extremely satisfying watching mountain ranges, watersheds, riverbeds, and other terrain suddenly appear in the LiDAR data. Check it out here and let me know what your favorite results are:
