I’m running to get Sacramento focused on the issues that matter most to you, the basics. You deserve to be safe walking down the street at night, you deserve to own a home you can afford, and you should be able to send your kid to a great public school. With focus and accountability, we can make it happen.

.Zohran Kwame Mamdani and I have something huge in common — we’re both entirely focused on making life better for working people. We have very different ideas on how to do that, but I think that’s the sign of a healthy democracy: the ability to disagree civilly, debate thoughtfully, and grapple with the fact that what we’ve been doing isn’t working — even, and perhaps most importantly, when you come from the same political party. I love New York, but I’m happy to be on a flight home right now — because California, we have a whole lot of work to do.

Families like Michelle’s are why I do this work. Everyone deserves to be safe in California, and by getting Back to Basics with functioning Care Courts, fully funding Prop. 36, and making sure people who are a danger to themselves and others are in treatment – we will be.

Priority one when I’m governor: lower costs for all of us.

If just saying “yes” were enough, we wouldn’t have a housing crisis in California. In San Jose, we made “yes” mean something. We cut fees and unlocked thousands of homes. Now we need to do the same in Sacramento — cut fees, lower the cost of capital, speed up permitting, and streamline regulation so saying “yes” actually results in more housing.

Some experts say gas prices could go to $7 per gallon. That’s why we need a temporary suspension of our state’s gas taxes, which are the highest in the nation. California leaders say they care about working families. Let’s make them prove it with a temporary suspension of our gas taxes while gas prices remain so high.

Our downtowns are places people live and work — but too often, they aren’t safe or clean enough for people to do either. The folks in the city I lead, and in the cities I’ve been coming to visit, aren’t asking for much. I often hear the same thing – a small business owner is losing customers because they have someone sleeping next to their front door each night. A family can’t go to the neighborhood park because someone is doing drugs on the playground. An event producer can’t sell tickets because people are scared to walk the streets at night. Making progress on these basic issues of homelessness and crime allows small businesses to thrive and the economy to respond. We’ve done that in San Jose, and as Governor, I’ll make sure Downtown LA and city centers across our state see the same results.

Last week, I visited the Pacific Palisades to hear directly from residents of Altadena, Malibu, and the Palisades about the failures of government at every level — and the consequences they are still living with. They have every right to be frustrated by the slow pace of recovery. As Governor, I will appoint a dedicated Recovery Czar to cut through bureaucracy, confront the statewide insurance crisis by bringing insurers back to the table, and invest in innovative permitting and home-building strategies. We will not only build back better — we will build back faster.

California has increased spending by 75% in six years. Are your bills 75% cheaper? Are our schools 75% better? No. Because the problem isn’t how much we spend — it’s how we spend it. And I’ll only spend taxpayer dollars on policies that actually make people’s lives better. Plan out tomorrow. Thanks for the conversation david friedberg!
