First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us at Trafalgar Square to celebrate May 18 in London. I, like countless others across the globe, work tirelessly and out of pocket to do everything we can for our country and the 6.2 million Somalilanders back home who for the last 33 years have been ignored by the international community. This flame and energy will never die down and God willing I will continue to do all I can. Regrettably, I must share my recent observations on how our politicians continue to let down Somalilanders who have high expectations for their country especially those back home whose futures depend on them doing a good job. Last year, despite promises of support, the Foreign Minister and his team failed to deliver. This year, they made similar commitments but once again failed. The UKSLA, with remarkable community support, organised & paid for the event today, yet after months of discussions and wasted efforts, the Foreign Ministry only this morning after everything was paid sent a sum significantly less than what was promised and significantly less than what is befitting a government who spends truck loads on lunches and dinners. This was in addition to an organised attempt by a few politicians to undermine the celebrations for personal gain and childish vendettas. Yes there are many politicians who were hoping today would fail but all those that turned up for the sake of their country made it a success. I have witnessed a rotten political culture consisting of a political class unable to prioritise national interest over personal agendas. Those who advise the President must tell him the truth about how those who serve at his pleasure are actively sabotaging #Somaliland. Today we had Ministers, Governors and other government officials turn up to the event demanding rights which they feel were bestowed on them by God almighty. Each feeling entitled to speak not to add value to Somaliland’s cause but only to promote themselves. This was even more distasteful following the lack of support from the Government in the first place. This culture is a cancer to Somaliland & is exhibited by many of our politicians. However, I must add that whilst in Somaliland I met several Politicians in the Government that were genuine about Somaliland and who do everything in their power to support all positive activity relating to Somaliland. Additionally, we spend a significant amount of money on our embassy in Djibouti, yet Somaliland’s ambassador to Djibouti was here in the UK demanding stage time. As alluded to, he was not the only one. It’s unfortunate that I must share this with you following May 18 celebrations and during election season, however, I believe that it is imperative for those of us who want a better Somaliland to speak out and not to be silenced or blackmailed. For those of you who think that this should have been dealt with behind the scenes, well that was attempted following last year’s problems and it clearly had no impact. We must always stay truthful to ourselves and what we stand for, not compromising what is right because we are scared to speak truth to power or to rock the boat. Finally, this message is from me alone & reflects my personal views & not those of the UKSLA.
