Today I vetoed a controversial immigration bill that puts our city’s legal standing, public safety, public health, and economy in jeopardy. During the City Council debate, a simple question was asked: “Who does this bill help?” No one answered – not the bill’s sponsor, not its supporters. The silence was telling because the answer indeed is – no one. In fact, this bill doesn’t save taxpayer dollars – it multiplies harm. The health and safety of our city is hurt when people are afraid to seek medical care or call the police. This bill duplicates state and federal laws that we are already following, and it puts us at risk of costly lawsuits. Immigration policy is the responsibility of the federal government. It’s not our lane. Read my full remarks to understand all the reasons I took this action:

Today, I issued the first veto of my administration. The decision to veto Ordinance #2024-800 is holding true to my commitment to be fiscally responsible and always seek return on investment for our citizens. The dramatic trash hauler increase passed by the City Council – with $4 million coming from reserves – is fiscally irresponsible and comes at the expense of city priorities like affordable housing and homelessness.

If we want good people to continue serving on our volunteer boards, we’ve got to be better. I’ve watched with dismay the attacks on Elizabeth Andersen, a lifelong public servant who I appointed to the library board. The attacks are personal, fabricated and unacceptable.
