Polio Became an Epidemic Disease Because Sanitation Improved. Not Despite It. Before modern plumbing, nearly every infant encountered poliovirus in the first months of life — while still carrying maternal antibodies. Exposure was near-universal and paralysis was rare. Clean water broke that cycle, pushing first exposure into later childhood and adulthood, when paralytic disease is far more likely. The epidemics of the 1940s and 50s were a byproduct of progress. It's the clearest example in medicine of an intervention producing a serious harm nobody anticipated, and it should make everyone humbler about second-order effects. If I Had a Healthy Child Today, I Would Go Unvaccinated Until Age Four. Here's the Reasoning. Almost all critical neurological development happens before age four. Vaccines are far safer when given later in life and metered out individually — not in large combination batches. Risk stratification matters: a child born without a spleen needs certain vaccines immediately. A perfectly healthy child in normal circumstances does not face the same calculus. That's not an anti-vaccine position. That's medicine applied to the individual in front of you. The Vaccine Sequence Was Finalized in January 2020. Two Days After the Genome Was Published. China released the SARS-CoV-2 genome on January 11. By January 13, NIAID and Moderna had locked the mRNA-1273 sequence — before most Americans had heard the word coronavirus, before the first U.S. death, two months before the national emergency. Human dosing began three days after that emergency was declared. That speed is either the strongest argument for the platform or the strongest argument for scrutinizing how the decisions got made. "Died With COVID" and "Died Of COVID" Were Never the Same Number The official U.S. count uses a broad definition: a positive test at any point, a death at any point. NCHS data shows a large share of those records carry no pneumonia diagnosis at all. Chart-adjudication studies consistently land well below the headline figure. This cuts against every side of the argument — it means the toll was overstated in one direction and long COVID and treatment failures were undercounted in another. Policy this consequential deserved a definition that could survive an audit.
