Young great Canadian ball striker, George Knudson ripping a driver at the fabulous Capilano GC in Vancouver, British Columbia. A point of interest, the man wearing a tie in the background is Doug Bajus. He was a member at Capilano and a top Canadian amateur. I played Mr. Bajus in the first round of the Pacific Northwest amateur in 1969. I had been in the medalist (-5 in the 36 hole qualifying) so I played number 64 in the match play— which ws Bajus who was probably close to 50 years old. I was 19 years old. In the match I was five up through 10–playing really well and cruising to an easy victory. But I ended up three putting number 18 to go into a playoff. I luckily won on the 20th hole. And then I won the next five matches to win my first Pacific Northwest amateur. I won this tournament two more times. I learned a great lesson. Do not take anything for granted. I was way up on an older gentleman, and it was going to be an easy win. Back to George Knudson-who was a Ben Hogan disciple. He was magical to watch.
