Q. Working together again after 10 years, what did you rediscover about each other? IU: Back then, our characters didn’t end on good terms—it was actually quite a negative relationship. But this time, we got to portray a really heart-wrenching love, and I think we were able to see so many more positive sides of each other. Watching Wooseok again after 10 years, I was genuinely impressed—both in who he is internally and how he carries himself outwardly. It felt like he’s only grown better with time, and honestly, he was Grand Prince I-an himself. Byeon Woo Seok: When we first met and worked together 10 years ago, of course I thought she was beautiful. But after all this time, getting to work with her again… all I can say is that she’s just so beautiful and so lovely. Baek Eunha: Recently, was there a performance by another actor that made you go, "Wow, I can't believe they pulled that off" — not just admiration, but a sense of awe? Han Ji Min: I think the most recent one I watched was When Life Gives You Tangerines, and IU stood out to me. I first got to know her as a singer, and though I had seen some of her other filmography in between, but acting is all I’ve done throughout my career, and even so, when I was at her level of experience (the number of years IU has been acting), I couldn’t have done what she did. I felt the same when I watched My Mister too. But this one, it just seemed like something really not easy to pull off. To play such a wide range — from teenage years, twenties, to a mother, and embody different characters — I found myself just watching and clapping in amazement. It was really something. Baek Eunha: Do the two of you have any personal connection? Han Ji Min: Not really. We once went to receive an award at the same event. We sat next to each other, and I was so happy about that. I was like, "I can’t believe I’m sitting next to her!" (laughs) That’s the one time we were in the same space.

Lee Dong Jin: There are so many strengths of "When Life Gives You Tangerines", but one of the biggest is how incredibly real it feels. So, there are moments when you think, “Wow, the realism in this is amazing.” But then again, when you think about it, you also go, “Isn’t this series kind of a fantasy?” I mean, it’s a love story between IU and Park Bogum in a rural village in Jeju Island, right? And Park Bogum’s character is portrayed as this steel-hearted guy who only knows love. Of course, he acts so well and totally pulls it off, but even so, sometimes you can’t help but think, “Isn’t this kind of a fantasy?” IU: Especially, Gwansik is truly a beautiful character, so when I first got the script and read it, I was also captivated by him. I do think their love has a bit of a fantasy-like element to it. Lee Dong Jin: I also have this thought. These days, low birth rates are a big issue, so I did wonder if this drama might actually be promoting marriage. Even though there are many tragic moments throughout the series, by the end, it kind of makes you feel like you’d want to have children. If it's with someone you love. IU: As a viewer, I felt like it was really half and half, like, “I want to get married,” or “If it’s not a love like that, then I don’t want to get married at all.” Lee Dong Jin: Hahaha why didn't I think of that? IU: I thought the reaction would be exactly half and half. Lee Dong Jin: From the perspective of a male viewer like me, characters like Gwansik is a little bit annoying. Because he sets the bar too high, so no matter how well you do, you can't receive the same kind of treatment. IU: It felt like Gwansik became the new standard for what a cool guy is, so it was refreshing even while reading the script.
