Memphis Zoo Welcomes Baby Orangutan🦧 Earlier this month, orangutan mom Jahe welcomed a baby girl with the support of Memphis Zoo’s Animal Care and Veterinary teams. Orangutans are Critically Endangered, making each birth in accredited zoological care an important contribution to the sustainability of managed populations, as well as ongoing research and conservation efforts. Because cesarean births are uncommon in orangutans, the Zoo assembled a specialized care team that included veterinary experts, an OB-GYN, a neonatologist as well as neonatal nurse practitioners to support Jahe and her baby through delivery and early care. The birth followed months of preparation, including training and observation focused on building trust and helping Jahe remain comfortable with care routines and veterinary procedures. Following the birth, Jahe and her baby entered a closely monitored recovery period. While Jahe healed from surgery, Animal Care and Veterinary teams provided temporary supplemental care to support the baby’s health and development. That care period has now successfully transitioned, and the baby has been reunited with Jahe. Mother and daughter are continuing to bond under close observation from the Zoo’s teams. This milestone reflects a coordinated effort across the Zoo. Multiple veterinarians, keepers, and staff from Nutrition, Research, and Conservation played key roles before, during, and after the birth, many working behind the scenes to support both mother and baby. The Zoo is proud to share that the baby girl has been named Ruhana (roo-hah-na), or Ru for short. The name Ruhana means soul, spirit, or essence of life in Sanskrit and honors Ruhana Kuddus, the first female Indonesian journalist and a pioneering advocate for women’s rights. The name was chosen to reflect strength, resilience, and the legacy of powerful women. Ru and Jahe will remain behind the scenes until both are ready to explore their exhibit. Memphis Zoo announces that Sumatran tiger "Suci" will now be moving to another zoological facility. This important step supports the continued conservation of Sumatran tigers and helps ensure future breeding success. If you have questions about Suci’s move, we encourage you to read our latest blog post, which explains why this transition is essential not only for Suci, but for her species. On May 5, 2023, history was made at Memphis Zoo when Sumatran tiger “Dari” gave birth to two cubs: “Nakal,” who is now at Cameron Park Zoo with their father, “Gusti,” and Suci. These cubs were the first tigers born at Memphis Zoo in over 24 years. The last cubs were born in 1998 to Dari’s grandmother, making Suci’s birth a meaningful full-circle moment. Suci quickly showed her brave and curious nature. During her very first time on exhibit, she stepped right out behind mom, ready to explore. She won hearts immediately. Guests and staff loved watching her playful energy, her time splashing in the pool, and the sweet snuggles she shared with Dari. Like her mom, she enjoyed a good balance of play and rest. Watching her grow from a tiny cub into the confident and beautiful tiger she is today has been an incredible journey. As she begins her next chapter, we know Suci will continue to inspire and raise awareness for her species. We are proud to have been part of her story and will always remember the impact she made here in Memphis. #memphiszoo

There are some new stars hogging all the attention on the Veldt! ✨🐽✨ We’re so excited to announce the birth of three Red River hog piglets, born on May 21, 2025. These little snoots are the first piglets for both mom "Koka" and dad "Cantaloupe." The Memphis Zoo has kept Red River hogs since 2003, and we have welcomed 18 piglets over the years. The last birth was in 2016. Red River hog piglets are born with a brown coat featuring yellow stripes and spots, resembling a "watermelon pattern." These markings help camouflage them in the wild. Around six months of age, the stripes and spots begin to fade as they develop their signature reddish coat. Koka and the piglets are currently being safely introduced to the Veldt Exhibit using a maternity pen. This provides the piglets with a safe space to start exploring while allowing the other Veldt animals to meet our newest arrivals safely. Our animal care staff will be diligently monitoring everyone's comfort levels to determine when the piglets are ready to move into the main yard. In the meantime, you can spot these adorable piggies in the maternity pen. Late morning is usually the best time to catch them. Their birth is a great example of the Species Survival Plan in action. SSPs help maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations across AZA-accredited zoos. As a recommended pair, Koka and Cantaloupe are contributing to the long-term care and conservation of their species. #memphiszoo #piglets #redriverhog #baby #babyanimals #love #animals

We are so excited that you can join us for today's breathtaking, awe-inspiring, and highly anticipated event of the Dusky Gopher Frog Olympics! 🐸 Beef Stroganoff, Big Chonky, and Kevin (some of the finest hoppers in the world) all etched their names into history as medalists in this prestigious competition of Frog Jumping. 🏅 Witness the athletic ability of these incredible Conservation Six ambassadors, and watch as the drama of sport unravels upon your screen. Make sure to cheer loud and proud for your favorite frog athlete! 📣 ---- In a joint research collaboration with Dr. Kelly Diamond of Rhodes College Biology, our amphibian team led by Dr. Sinlan Poo (Dr. Sinlan Poo (Sheila) 蒲歆嵐 🇹🇼🐸), Curator of Research, had the frogs jump to see how a change in environment may impact their locomotion. Half of our dusky gopher frogs were released into our outdoor pond enclosure, while the other half remained in their indoor glass tank enclosures. The research team looked at their jumping ability, total distance jumped, endurance, length, and height of jumps to see if there were any differences between frogs in the two enclosure spaces, and if so, how long it takes to see that difference. This is part of a wider mock-release project by the team to get an idea of what changes frogs may go through after being released through the reintroduction program.
