"We did more in 90 minutes than the politicians did in 20 years." 🇺🇸🇮🇷 The USA vs. Iran match at the 1998 World Cup carried one of the heaviest political weights in football history. Before kickoff, a major protocol crisis emerged: FIFA rules required Iranian players to walk toward the Americans for the pre-match handshake, but Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei strictly forbade it. The deadlock was broken only when the American players, coordinating with French and FIFA officials, agreed to waive the protocol and walk toward their opponents instead. This gesture transformed the tension into a historic display of sportsmanship, with both teams posing arm-in-arm and Iranian players presenting white roses to their rivals. While Iran won the match 2-1, the game ended with players swapping jerseys in a show of brotherhood. As US defender Jeff Agoos famously put it: "We did more in 90 minutes than the politicians did in 20 years."

🍕🇮🇷 Iran’s ketchup pizza – a tradition Italy could never imagine In Iran, unlike the Italian style, pizza is more like a "sandwich" with thick crust and heavy toppings. The most interesting part of this culture is the mandatory, generous serving of ketchup poured over the pizza. The sauce from those famous "bear-shaped" (Mahram Khersi) bottles, a legacy of the 1980s, is an absolute must-have for Iranians. While surprising to outsiders, this obsession with ketchup is Iran’s most beloved and nostalgic fast-food tradition. Video by Hamidreza Ebtekar

☦️🇮🇷 Saint Mary metro station in Tehran, Iran This architectural homage also reflects the deep respect held for Mary (Maryam) and Jesus (Isa) within Islam. In the Quran, Mary is the only woman mentioned by name and has an entire chapter (Surah Maryam) dedicated to her. She is revered as a symbol of purity and faith. Similarly, Jesus is considered one of the greatest prophets in Islam, known for his miracles and his message of peace. One of the features of this station is its architecture, which is inspired by a church-style design. The reason for this choice is the station's proximity to the Saint Sarkis Armenian Church on Karimkhan Street. The desiqners chose forms that echo church arches, columns, and skylights to create harmony between the station and the nearby religious building. Video by normalgaliniran | IG

🇪🇸🇸🇦 Did you know that Arabic still lives in the Spanish you speak today? For over 700 years, Arabs ruled parts of Spain — and their influence didn’t fade when the empire did. It stayed in the language. Words like ojalá (from inshallah), aceituna (from zaitun), azúcar (from sukkar), ajedrez (from shatranj), naranja (from naranj), and barrio (from barriya) remind us how deeply intertwined Arabic and Spanish history truly are. Which of these words surprised you the most? Let us know below👇 📷Credit: Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum | FB

⛪️ The church built over the tombs of the three priests from the Mede people who, according to local legend in Iran, followed the star and heralded the birth of Christ. 🇮🇷 St. Mary Church is an ancient Assyrian church located in the city of Urmia, Iran. The current old building of the church belongs to the Sasanian era and its interior design is a combination of Sasanian and Arsacid architecture. A Chinese princess, who contributed to its reconstruction in 642 AD, has her name engraved on a stone on the church wall. The famous Italian traveller Marco Polo also described the church in his visit. In the early 1960s, the old church was restored and a modern church with a spire was built adjacent to the ancient church. Video by Hamed Akbari
