Celebrate fashion as an art form this spring at The Met! Opening May 10, 2026, “Costume Art” is The Costume Institute’s annual exhibition. Focusing primarily on Western art from prehistory to the present, the show will explore artistic representations of the dressed body, pairing fashions and artworks from the Museum’s vast collection to highlight the inherent relationship between clothing and the body. “Costume Art” is the inaugural exhibition in a new, nearly 12,000-square-foot suite of galleries adjacent to the Great Hall, which will display the department’s annual spring show and mark a new chapter for the Museum. Happy birthday, Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, and welcome back! 🎉 After a long trip to Paris, where John Singer Sargent spent a remarkable decade, our beloved "Madame X" has finally returned to the American Wing at The Met. First shown at the 1884 Salon, the painting received a controversial reception because of Gautreau’s reputation and appearance, which challenged the conventions of French society at the time. However, Sargent later called the painting “the best thing I have done,” and today it stands as an icon in The Met’s collection. ___ John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925). Now on view! This is the first early Ptolemaic fragment of the Odyssey ever discovered. It dates to the beginning of the Hellenistic period, after Alexander the Great, when the Great Library at Alexandria was built and began gathering works of Greek literature. See this fragment on view in Gallery 162. ___ 📜 “Papyrus fragment with lines from Homer's Odyssey,” ca. 285–250 BCE. Miscellaneous-Papyrus.

On this day in 1867, an architect who captivated the American imagination was born. For more than seventy-five years, Frank Lloyd Wright played a central role in the development of modern architecture, leaving a lasting mark on the American landscape. The Frank Lloyd Wright Room was originally the living room of the Little family's summer home, designed and built between 1912 and 1914 in Wayzata, Minnesota. Together, Wright and the Littles created an interior that is expansive yet cozy, angular yet welcoming, global in its influences yet deeply rooted in the local landscape. ___ 🏠 Frank Lloyd Wright (American, Richland Center, Wisconsin 1867–1959 Phoenix, Arizona), “Living Room from the Francis W. Little House,” 1912–14.

Coming May 2025, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will examine the historical and cultural emergence of the Black dandy. Inspired by curator Monica Miller’s 2009 book, "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity," the exhibition will present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world. Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour will co-chair the next #CostumeInstitute Benefit on the First Monday in May. LeBron James will serve as honorary chair.
