Roll out the carpet, literally! In 1668, Louis XIV commissioned the Savonnerie manufactory to create a series of 92 monumental carpets for the Louvre’s Grande Galerie, one of the most ambitious textile projects of all time. Now, for the first time in The Met’s history, three Savonnerie carpets from this extraordinary commission are on view together. Hear European Sculpture and Decorative Arts curator Wolf Burchard share how the “Music” carpet was installed in the galleries. “A King’s Carpet: Louis XIV and the Savonnerie” is now on view in Galleries 524–528.

Now on view! This is the first early Ptolemaic fragment of the Odyssey ever discovered. It dates to the beginning of the Hellenistic period, after Alexander the Great, when the Great Library at Alexandria was built and began gathering works of Greek literature. Now on view at The Met: The Genesis Facade Commission: Liu Wei, “Speculation”. Beijing-based conceptual artist Liu Wei brings together fragments of urban environment, historical references, and bodily forms to explore cycles of rupture and mending. Across four monumental sculptures, the human hand appears as a recurring motif, transforming a familiar form into something at once recognizable and fantastical on our iconic facade. A dreamland in blue and purple, captured in glass. 💙 Recently installed in the American Wing galleries, this Tiffany window brings cascading wisteria to life in shimmering shades of blue and lavender under a glorious sky, with a sun-dappled bay afar. Created in 1908, the window is thought to evoke both the landscape around Louis C. Tiffany’s Long Island estate and the wisteria vines that surrounded the country home of William Skinner, for whom the window was originally made. ——— Louis C.
