I was skeptical of Top Tracer ball speeds when I saw this last fall. It turns out that I was very wrong to be skeptical. Sargent hits the living crap out of the driver. He’s not playing his best so far today, but this kid is legit putting out mid 190s ball speed on the regular….crazy.

I think this is a fair statement: Golfers - while putting a 30 footer - are consciously reducing anatomical ranges of motion in the many joints and limbs from the hands to the feet - especially when compared to the range of motions used during a 300 yard drive. You WOULD THINK that reducing these anatomical ranges of motion while putting, a better overall control of the face-to-path relationship would emerge. Most golfers would ASSUME that their face-to-path control would be noticeably better on 10 30-footers when compared to their face-to-path control on 10 full powered drives. This HAS TO MAKE SENSE because the rate of closure of the club face on a drive is in the 2500° per second range while the rate of closure of the club face on a 30 foot putt is in the 30° per second range. Well, lo and behold, it does not. And in fact, many high level golfers show better face-to-path control with their driver at 115 mph than their face-to-path control with their putter at 6 mph. So, this begs the question for golf instructors and competitive golfers - in the pursuit of more accuracy from shot to shot, is it wise to attempt to reduce your own personal rate of closure with any club - driver through putter - in the hopes that it will bring “better face-to-path control” which would lead to more accurate shot outcomes? Start thinking. It may mean a lot to your personal journey towards better golf.
