The dignity we want for ourselves must be the dignity we demand for everybody. That is the conviction Barbados brings to the world. Solidarity means coming together. Justice means being fair. Every human being has equal value. Every single one. At the United Nations General Assembly, I challenged a world that still decides whose lives deserve protection and whose suffering can be ignored. No race is superior. No people are disposable. Until we honour that truth, "everywhere is war" remains a warning we have failed to heed. What the world needs now is love, with the courage to confront injustice and defend our shared humanity. Love and a little kindness. For everyone.

We understand why a family needs 30 years to repay a mortgage. Surely we can apply that same understanding to the schools, clinics and water systems that serve generations. At Accra Reset: Full Circle, on the sidelines of UNGA in New York, I made the case for financing that matches the life of what we build. Give countries time for those investments to educate their people, improve their health and create the prosperity that helps repay the debt. The terms on which we borrow must give the future a chance.

In 2026, I cannot believe we are being asked to respond to the suggestion that the descendants of the enslaved should pay for the machinery that oppressed them. The Caribbean does not owe Britain for slavery, for colonial extraction, or for laws that treated African people as chattel. We are not asking for charity. We are asking for justice, and history itself has already told the truth. Those who wish to speak on this matter should first take the time to read enough history to understand it. The Caribbean will not be used as a prop for anyone’s politics. We know who we are, we know what was done, and we will continue to speak for repair with clarity and dignity.

Every meeting abroad must mean something at home. I was pleased to meet with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street as Barbados and the United Kingdom continue to deepen a partnership grounded in history, friendship and shared purpose. We spoke about the work our countries can do together to keep our people safe, protect our climate, create new opportunities, and strengthen the international order on which small states depend. For Barbados, that is always the test: what helps our people, strengthens our region, and gives our voice greater force in the world.

It is with profound sadness that I join Barbados, the Caribbean and the cricketing world in mourning the passing of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, our Sir Garry. From Bay Land to Kensington and onto the world stage, he carried Barbados and the West Indies with distinction. He made us all stand a little taller as Barbadians, and I will always be grateful for what he gave to our country and our people. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and all who loved him. Today has been declared a Day of National Mourning. Flags will be flown at half-mast, no official functions will take place, and details of the State Funeral will be announced. Barbados stands. The West Indies stand. The world stands. Well played, Sir Garry. Well played.

Kensington Oval held so many emotions today. The result did not go our way against New Zealand, but the West Indies fought hard and gave us moments to cheer. I also treasured the opportunity to spend time with Ian Bishop, exchanging fond memories of our National Hero, Sir Garry Sobers, and announcing that his funeral will be held at the ground that became synonymous with his greatness. Ian even allowed me to try my hand at a little cricket commentary. I only hope Sir Garry would have been proud of me.

Tonight, as we rededicated the Marcus Garvey Amphitheatre, Dr Julius Garvey reminded us that the most important knowledge is self-knowledge. When a people know who they are, they cannot be taught to despise themselves, surrender their rights or accept limits on what they can become. As Barbados approaches 400 years of modern settlement, difficult conversations must come. Let no one fool us into believing that teaching our history, affirming our humanity or standing together through the Season of Emancipation is an attack on another race, religion or people. To assert self-love is not to advocate hate. We must know ourselves, love ourselves and repair what has been wounded. A people who know themselves cannot be made small.

Today, Barbados rose as one to say farewell to our Sir Garry. As his casket passed beneath a salute of raised bats and entered Kensington one final time, the nation gave him its standing ovation. I laid a wreath as Prime Minister, but my heart said goodbye without office, title or protocol. Just Mia, saying farewell to my hero, my mentor and my friend. The world called you the greatest. We were blessed to call you ours. Go well, Sir Garry. Well played. Well lived. Well loved.

It is deeply moving to hear one National Hero honour another, and I will always treasure having introduced the two of you. In Parliament, I made a simple point. Once a Barbadian has done the work, the money they have earned must be paid on time and must not be taken from their pay packet without proper authority. A wage packet is not an accounting entry. It is rent, bus fare, school lunch, food, medicine and dignity. We cannot control every global shock or tell the shipping lines what price to charge Barbados. We can ensure that working people receive and keep what they have earned, backed by a remedy with teeth. That is what the Protection of Wages Bill is about.

In Accra, Ghana, at the Juneteenth commemoration and the High-Level Conference on reparatory justice, I reflected on why this moment must matter to every child of Africa, whether in Bridgetown, Kingston, Accra, Port of Spain, Lagos, New York or Bahia. We must not allow language, geography, passport, party or generation to divide a people whose story is connected. The debt of history is still being paid in the currency of our children’s future, in development gaps, in climate vulnerability, in the cost of finance, in stolen culture and in opportunities delayed. Reparatory justice is therefore about repair, yes, but also about the world we now choose to build. One rooted in truth. One rooted in dignity. One that allows Africa and its diaspora to speak with one voice. One people. One purpose.

Today, Barbados said farewell to one of its brightest daughters. Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox reminded us that a life is not measured by its length, but by its purpose. She brought brilliance, compassion and humility to her work, believing deeply that science must always serve people. It is fitting that she spent her final hours doing exactly that, standing alongside the fisherfolk and communities she was so committed to serving. Our duty now is to carry her legacy forward. To serve with the same integrity, the same compassion and the same unwavering commitment to country that defined her life. On behalf of a grateful nation I extend sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. To her loved ones, we say thank you for sharing Shelly-Ann with Barbados, we will forever honour her service.

Today was one of those moments in the life of a nation that we pause to recognise. I was honoured to witness Commissioner Sonia Boyce take the oath of office as Commissioner of Police. Her appointment rests on years of service, discipline, competence and commitment to Barbados. My Government stands ready to support Commissioner Boyce and the Barbados Police Service as we continue strengthening public safety, confidence and trust. I also thank outgoing Commissioner Richard Boyce for his steady service to our country. May God bless Commissioner Boyce, the Barbados Police Service, and Barbados.
