The Conservatives saddled Britain with the most acute housing crisis in living memory. In Southwark, almost 18,000 households are on the housing waiting list. Their failure to get Britain building has sent rents skyrocketing, driven people to homelessness and locked a generation out of home ownership. Labour is committed to building 1.5 million homes over the next five years. We will make the tough decisions needed to get Britain building and secure the homes people so desperately need.

The report published today by the Institute for Fiscal Studies Institute for Fiscal Studies is clear. The least well-off have been hardest hit by inflation. Low-income households are paying 29.1% more for their food, compared with 23.5% for better-off households. This is one of the key drivers behind the shameful fact that 40% of children in Peckham are growing up in poverty. I visited the brilliant team at Pecan to learn about their vital work on the frontline of the cost-of-living crisis. I am more determined than ever to bring an end to the need for foodbanks.
