For all of my life, the Republican Party has been defined by a commitment to a conservative agenda, to America as leader of the free world, limited government, free market economics and traditional moral values, especially the right to life. I'm proud to say that from the Reagan administration to the first Trump administration, we governed on that agenda. But I wrote "What Conservatives Believe," because just in the last four or five years, there's been a rise of what I call the populist right that focuses more on what we're against than what we're for, focuses more on grievance than a positive conservative agenda.

On this fifth anniversary of January 6th, I wanted to pass along remarks I made about that fateful day at the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award ceremony last year. I first spoke about the men and women in uniform- the true heroes that day; how I will always believe that, by God’s grace, I did my duty to see to the peaceful transfer of power under the Constitution and I expressed my heartfelt gratitude to the countless Americans of every background who have reached out with a word of encouragement these past five years. January 6 was a tragic day but it became a triumph of freedom when, after Capitol Police quelled the violence, leaders in both chambers in both political parties reconvened the very same day and finished democracy’s work under the Constitution. The Constitution is the common ground on which we stand. In these divided times, I believe more than ever that on that common ground we will forge a boundless future together and America’s best days are yet to come. So Help Us God. I don’t know why Joe Biden is doing press conferences in the Rose Garden talking about something other than America’s role as leader of the free world. If I was President of the United States, I’d have the team in the Situation Room and direct the Joint Special Operations Command to stand up special forces and have them immediately be prepared to deploy into Gaza.
