Our company has a radically different mission statement: “We exist to give generously.” Because we are a bootstrapped and privately owned we have the freedom to do whatever we want with the profits. We are exercising that today. This doesn’t make any financial sense, but it makes perfect human sense. What good is money if you cannot use it to help others? Over the years, customers have shared many special stories of how our product has impacted their lives. One of the stories that made the biggest impression on me came from a friend. She and I had taught a class together at OU for several semesters. In 2020, she and her husband moved back to Florida to be close to her father. He was diagnosed with cancer and she kept me updated as he was going through treatment. One night she said this to me: “It may not seem like a big deal to you, but I wanted to thank you for the excellent products you make. The chemotherapy has badlly dehydrated my father and his doctor stressed how important it was for him to stay hydrated. Due to the effects of the treatment, we couldn’t find anything that he could drink out of until we tried one of your kids water bottles we bought at Target. It has made a huge difference in his quality of life the last few weeks.” Her story stood out in my mind. In the months that followed I learned that we get lots of messages from customers who are going through cancer treatments and use our products as their sidekick. It was awesome to hear that the work we put into making excellent products was making a real life difference. Those stories led to the initiative we announced today.
