14 years ago today, Navy LT Christopher Mosko was killed in Ghazni, Afghanistan. He was a Navy EOD officer. A bomb disposal expert embedded with Special Forces. He lived by the ethos "If Not Me, Then Who?" 10 years before he fell, he was just a 18-year-old in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, delivering a speech that would become part of his living legacy. He spoke of the undying love of parents. The same love his father, John, now carries forward by turning grief into action through the Travis Manion Foundation. John said, "a recent Chris Moment was finding a CD containing his speech at his 2002 Baccalaureate service. It is 14 years since I heard his voice over a SAT phone." Chris was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service, but his true impact remains more than words can state.

Just now Tom Sauer said in a major conflict we could “run out of ammo in seven, eight, maybe nine days.” And Tim Sheehy reminded us **it’s a good thing** we build the most advanced capabilities on earth. e.g. the problem isn’t quality, it’s depth. What’s interesting right now is the Office of Strategic Capital may finally be part of the solution. $209B in loan authority. The most commercial people to ever set foot inside the Pentagon. Feinberg's guys. OSC isn’t the whole answer, but it’s one of the first serious attempts in a long time to fix the production side of the equation.

The very same day American business leaders were in San Francisco “delivering China a propaganda coup” as stated in the WJS editorial, “U.S. CEOs on the Chinese menu,” there was an event on the other coast, in our nation’s capital, attended by the largest gathering of venture capitalists in Washington’s history rallying for continued American exceptionalism – particularly within our defense industrial base. In contrast to the “bland platitudes” whereby attendees rewarded Xi with a standing ovation, speakers at the Defense Ventures Summit were unequivocal in their commitment to America and her allies. Andreessen Horowitz’s Katherine Boyle stated, “Not only are we betting on America, but America and our allies are best off when we’re building technology companies that support the national interest.” What a refreshing thing to hear. Past decisions by leading technology companies to abandon their partnership with the U.S. military may have left Americans discouraged that our most dynamic companies were not willing to answer the call of service. But the scene in Washington, DC last week offered hope that new technology companies are being built with a renewed sense of patriotism. Fortune 100 CEOs should take notice.
