Today in 1945, a 500-ship U.S. Navy armada opens fire on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The bombardment, which precedes amphibious landings by 30,000 Marines, lasts for three days straight. Nearly 20,000 defenders are dug in on the five-mile-long island.

On this day in 1958, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II makes its first flight. More than 5,000 will eventually roll off assembly lines and serve in a dozen countries' air forces. As of 2026, three nations still fly Phantoms: Greece, Turkey and Iran.
