The Drop show creator Malcom Spellman explains why he decided to include more modern songs like M.a.a.d City into the show: "For me, the whole scene with Lamar when he's dealing with that shit cannot exist without that song. If Top & them wouldn't have cleared it, that scene would not have been in the show. And I do feel like, even though Kendrick is rapping about way rougher shit than what you see from Lamar, the soul of Kendrick is in Lamar in how he feels about that. To me, the way that song "m.A.A.d city" feels for a regular person is that scene."
