In 1999, Nirosta Steel played at the Gin Gin Bookstore and Gallery in Taipei, the only LGBT bookstore in Taiwan. This CD became the first queer album released in the country. One highlight is “Twinkle Angel”: gay 90s slowcore with lyrics based on descriptions for Japanese pornos.

In the early 1980s, the Boston radio station WGBH commissioned the 28-year-old choreographer Marta Renzi to make a half-hour PBS special. The result was her first film, YOU LITTLE WILD HEART (1981), soundtracked non-stop by Bruce Springsteen songs. It’s so good. Here’s a clip.

2 years since this tweet and Tems is the first big pop star I’ve seen make an Afrobeats 3-Step single. The original South African style is more in the lineage of dance music while Tems is mostly just taking the kick pattern and translating it into a more digestible pop song form.
