I didn’t understand why so many people disliked 9S until I played the English version. English isn’t my native language, and the translation made me feel that 9S sometimes came across as rude and bratty. But in the original version, he’s actually very kind, caring, and playful. He isn’t only gentle toward androids, but also toward friendly machines. In many side quests, you can see 9S interacting with different machines, showing a soft, patient big-brother side, comforting children, and willingly helping machines who are in trouble (even if he teases them a bit while doing so). “Family Squabble” is one of the side quests that’s translated a bit differently in how 9S addresses the machines and in the attitude he shows toward them.

It’s not only the main characters who feel different, some of the supporting characters do too. This is the later part of the side quest “Lost Girl.” At the end, the little sister machine calls 9S “mister” and 2B “grumpy lady” in English, whereas in Japanese she calls them big brother and big sister. I laughed for so long when the machines called 2B a “grumpy lady”, 2B isn’t grumpy at all.

This is the last video I’m going to upload. I honestly don’t remember which quest it was from, but it shows how 2B and 9S normally interact. 9S keeps complaining, and 2B patiently stays by his side and keeps reminding him (those who know the reason will understand why she does this). Their interaction has warmth, it’s not one-sided or cold at all. In the English version, though, 2B tends to ignore him or sound impatient. It gives me the impression that 9S comes off as childish, constantly complaining or just trying to get 2B’s attention, while 2B doesn’t just feel cold, but outright indifferent, as if she finds 9S annoying and doesn’t want to engage with him. The rest of the subtleties really need to be experienced firsthand. Replaying with Japanese VA or watching the Japanese version on YT helps you better understand their relationship. *** This is just additional material for people who are interested.
