Today, I had the distinct pleasure and honour to pay a courtesy call on His Excellency Alexander Van der Bellen Alexander Van der Bellen - President of Austria, at the Presidential Chancellery(Präsidentschaftskanzlei), in the historic Hofburg Imperial Palace, Vienna. I conveyed our appreciation of Austria's steadfast partnership and commitment to the UN family in Vienna, a city that continues to embody the spirit and practice of multilateralism. As host country of UN Vienna, Austria continues to set a strong example, anchoring a system of shared purpose at a time when the world needs it dearly. I drew from his counsel and insight at the start of my tenure as the DG, UNOV and ED, UN Office on Drugs & Crime, and very much look forward to deepening the cooperation between UN Vienna and Austria.

My mission to Haiti and the Dominican Republic ahead of presenting the 11th UN Office on Drugs & Crime report on Haiti to the United Nations Security Council, pursuant to Resolutions 2692, 2743, and 2785, on Monday 20th July in New York, reaffirms the urgency for continued, focused international attention on, and support to, Haiti. The growing convergence of transnational organized crimes, including trafficking of illicit weapons, munitions and drugs, facilitated by maritime vulnerabilities, illicit financial flows, corruption, and weak criminal justice systems, continues to threaten efforts seeking to restore security to Haiti. Furthermore, the evolving situation also translates into significant risks to its neighborhood, and beyond. The complexity of this situation demands international support that targets immediate measures to secure Haiti from gang control, as well as medium and long-term efforts that develop policy and legal frameworks as well as build and strengthen institutions to sustain gains made, strengthen rule of law, secure and protect populations, and restore and guarantee livelihoods. As confirmed by the leadership of Haiti and the Dominican Republic as well as UN colleagues on the ground, UNODC is a critical actor and force multiplier - delivering professional and technical support that bolsters the capacity of governments across all the threat and risk areas. I commend the UNODC teams in Haiti and the Dominican Republic for their dedicated service on the frontlines.

Austria has long been a trusted partner of the United Nations, with a proud tradition of diplomacy that has shaped international cooperation for decades. Today, I had the honour of meeting with H.E. Christian Stocker, Federal Chancellor of Austria, at the historic Chancellery building. We had an excellent discussion on how we can build on Austria’s role as a UN host country, including elevating its international profile, supporting its vibrant and diverse community, and ensuring the UN’s presence in Vienna remains a platform for dialogue. I look forward to working closely with Austria, particularly during its 2027–2028 term on the UN Security Council, to strengthen multilateralism and reinforce the importance of the UN’s work. My sincere thanks to Austria for its longstanding partnership and hospitality extended to the #UNinVienna community.
