A young man named Simon Kato says he in 2015 lent a woman Shs4.8m. When he later asked her to repay it, she invited him to her house to collect the money. When he arrived, she asked him to wait while she went to fetch it from her bedroom. She returned with her clothes torn, her breasts exposed, and raised an alarm, screaming that he had tried to kill her. Simon was arrested, charged with attempted murder, and remanded. Witnesses were staged against him. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He served 10 years and 6 months in Nakasongola Prison. When he was finally released, he found that both his parents had died, his family’s former home in Lubigi had been demolished by NEMA, and the woman who had falsely accused him had sold her property and disappeared. Uganda is a deeply wicked society, from ordinary individuals to institutions. How do people live with themselves after this kind of cruelty? How do they sleep at night?

Salaamu Musumba: In the state’s summary of evidence in Dr Besigye’s treason case, it is alleged that I facilitated meetings in three countries, yet: I’ve never set foot in Switzerland in my entire life. I’ve never been to Belgium, I only passed through it many years ago with my children. And I’ve also never been to Greece. I’ve held 10 passports since I started traveling in 1986, and I’ve never been to the three countries listed.

This from the President is extremely dangerous and deeply worrying. He has not only issued a no bail directive for Opposition politicians but also effectively given the military license to abduct and hold people incommunicado, as long as they’re at some point paraded in courts.
