Cool tidbit of baseball history: This was the one and only at-bat where Mariano Rivera ever faced Barry Bonds. June 8, 2002 at Yankee Stadium, top of the 9th, with the game tied 3–3. Bonds had already hit an absolutely enormous three-run homer earlier in the game. Then Rivera got Bonds for their one and only showdown: six pitches, swinging strikeout. Bonds afterward said of Rivera, “He’s nasty. That’s why he’s the best.” And of course, called by the late, great John Sterling. Rest in peace. 🕊️⚾️

On this day in 1991, the Rangers signed 23-year-old RFA Adam Graves to a 5-year, $2.44M offer sheet. Edmonton wanted Steven Rice & Louie DeBrusk as compensation, while the Rangers offered Troy Mallette. An arbitrator sided with NY and Mallette went to Edmonton. Funny enough, a month later Edmonton got Rice & DeBrusk anyway, along with Bernie Nicholls, in the Mark Messier trade. Graves initially wore No. 11 in NY, but gave it to Messier and switched to No. 9 which is the number that now hangs in the MSG rafters. Less than three years later, Graves scored this goal in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to put the Rangers up 2-0. 💙❤️ #NYR

In 1994 when the Rangers had their parade, before introducing Mark Messier, Mayor Giuliani said, “You want guys like it here, right? You want to come back here, right? Go Knicks!” Well it took 32 years but the Knicks did it!! Then a definitely-sauced Messier stepped up to the mic. “We might as well come back here next year.” Thirty-two years later, the Rangers still haven’t made it back for another Cup parade. Hopefully that changes soon. 🔵🔴🏒🏆

Happy NHL draft day! One of the wildest moments in NHL Draft history: In 1991, Eric Lindros was the consensus #1 prospect, but before the draft he told the Quebec Nordiques not to select him because he would never play for them. Quebec drafted him anyway. When his name was called, Lindros refused to put on the Nordiques jersey, holding it over his shoulder instead. He sat out for a full year rather than sign. In 1992, the standoff ended with one of the biggest trades in NHL history. Quebec sent Lindros to Philadelphia for a massive package that included Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, and two 1st-round picks. Ironically, that trade helped build the franchise that became the Colorado Avalanche, winning Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. 🏒🥅

“On a day when they buried their team captain and leader.” On August 6, 1979, just hours after laying Thurman Munson to rest, the Yankees returned to Yankee Stadium to face the Orioles. Baseball suddenly seemed insignificant, yet somehow it became the perfect way to honor the man who meant so much to the franchise. One of Munson’s closest friends, Bobby Murcer, drove in all five Yankees runs—including the walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth—to give New York a 5-4 victory. It remains one of the most emotional and unforgettable games in baseball history. Moments like this are why sports are so much more than wins and losses. On February 4, 1989, Guy Lafleur returned to the Montreal Forum as a New York Ranger, more than four years after retiring from the NHL. At 37 years old, he came back and put up 2 goals and an assist against his former team, with both goals coming against Patrick Roy. And the Montreal fans? They cheered him anyway. “Guy! Guy! Guy!” rang through the Forum, even as he scored against their own team. I love everything about this clip. No helmet, the Rangers sweater, and seeing Canadiens fans show so much love for one of their all-time greats. Hockey just looked different back then. #NYR #GOHABSGO

May 11, 2014 — Mother’s Day. Just days after losing his mom, Marty St. Louis scored and poured his heart onto the ice in one of the most emotional moments of that Stanley Cup run for the New York Rangers. Hockey felt bigger than the game that night. I was there with my dad. My mom had passed too, and he took me to this game. It was incredibly emotional, and even now, I can still feel the emotion from this goal every time I watch it. 💙 #NYR #StanleyCup #MothersDay

May 11, 2014- during the same Marty Mother’s Day game- you could see the frustration building from the Pittsburgh Penguins in game 6. A 3-1 series lead quickly turned into the Rangers favor. The New York Rangers were in their heads. Scrums after the whistle. Extra shoves. Words being exchanged. Then sneakily, Henrik Lundqvist sprayed Sidney Crosby with his water bottle. It cost Lundqvist $5,000. Worth every penny.

The #NYR aren’t that team anymore. Windows close. That’s just reality of sports. Every team gets a shot, some come close, some win. But Artemi Panarin was the best free-agent signing in Rangers history, and moments like this are the ones I’ll always hold onto. Not sure how much longer he’ll be here — but I loved every second of him as a Ranger. Take me back to these vibes.

10 years ago today, the New York Rangers pulled off one of the best trades in franchise history. On July 18, 2016, the Rangers acquired Mika Zibanejad and a 2018 second-round pick from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Derick Brassard and a 2018 seventh-round pick. A decade later, Zibanejad has become one of the faces of the franchise, recording 284 goals, 383 assists, and 667 points in 730 regular-season games with the Rangers. Ten years later, it’s safe to say the Rangers won this trade. #NYR
