Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada is calling for stricter gun control in Canada in light of Monday’s shooting that left three people dead in Côte-des-Neiges. The mayor made the call during a news conference Tuesday shortly after visiting with residents and merchants in the neighbourhood. “We can’t live in a country, or a city or community, where you’re at risk of dying from a gun,” the mayor said. “What happened yesterday should not happen anywhere else.” Read the latest:

"The threat is controlled." Although officers on the scene initially told The Gazette they were searching for a possible second suspect, Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher later said he believes there was only one suspect involved in today's shootings in the city's Côte-des-Neiges area. “We preferred to enlarge all of the crime scenes to be sure that we had the situation completely controlled,” Dagher said at a press conference Monday afternoon. Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada has addressed the growing controversy over Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau's unilingual response to Sunday night's fatal collision in New York. While the mayor said it was not her role to decide whether Rousseau should resign — something a provincial minister called for on Wednesday — she added that she understands why others are calling for it. "Treating people with dignity also means speaking their language," she said. “And I think he failed in that regard — not just once, but on several occasions now.” Full story: #PolMTL

Something is happening here and it’s about much more than hockey, writes The Gazette's Brendan Kelly. Kelly was just outside the steel-fenced-in fan-jam area beside the Bell Centre Friday night, standing around with thousands of fans watching Game 3 of the Montreal Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning playoff series. It had been a beautiful sunny spring day, but it was pretty darn chilly by the time the two teams went into overtime for the third straight game. Then Hutson scored and everyone went nuts. After the U.S. and Israeli strikes rocked Tehran early Saturday morning — and Tehran answering with missile strikes of its own — members of Montreal’s large Iranian diaspora stood alongside other supporters in downtown Montreal, dancing, embracing and chanting for the end of the Islamic Republic that has ruled since 1979.

It was a wild night at the Bell Centre. Game 7 was in Tampa on Sunday, but the Canadiens’ home rink was packed to the rafters for a viewing party, with the faithful clearly hoping to celebrate a victory by their hometown heroes.
