NEWS: Elon Musk rejects the far right label in an exchange with The Economist "I support the normal people. What you call the far right, falsely." He challenged the interviewer to say what is extreme about 3 positions. "Here are the principles and tell me which of these sound terrible. That we should have secure borders, that we should have safe cities, that we should have sensible spending. Which of those three are far right fringe?" Elon then turned on the framing itself. "I would like to just admonish you and the media for the absurd characterization of the far right. It is false and misleading and nonsense." He asked that the exchange survive the edit. "Please keep this part in." Elon said the same speeches get judged by who delivered them, describing a habit of reading Obama and Clinton speeches to people and telling them Trump said it. He named Rupert Lowe as an example of who he means by normal people. (Source: The Economist, July 2026)

WATCH: Affirm's Max Levchin says Elon Musk is "just a normal dude." Max Levchin, CEO of Affirm and a PayPal co-founder, talked about knowing Elon Musk and the rest of the "PayPal Mafia" in the early days. "We knew the true version of that person," Levchin said. "The ultra philosophical Peter Thiel, the go all in every time Elon Musk, the these days gubernatorial David Sacks." He said he saw the real Elon Musk, not the public image. "I've seen him sweaty and tired and grumpy at the company kitchen a thousand times." His takeaway is simple. These founders are not superhuman. "They're not gods, they're humans," Levchin said. "If that guy who's just a normal dude... he's going for this big of an idea, I should strive too." Source: Affirm CEO Max Levchin (Max Levchin), via a16z (a16z)

JUST IN: Elon Musk on AI acceleration "If you can't beat them, join them." 👀 Elon says every attempt he made to slow AI ended up speeding it up "The only thing we can try to do is minimize the probability of the bad outcome." He declined to work on AI for years, then founded OpenAI as a counterweight to Google when Google had close to a monopoly on the field. Anthropic later spun out of OpenAI. "These actions have actually resulted in knock-on effects that accelerated AI, which wasn't really my intention." His conclusion is that all roads lead to acceleration, leaving 2 options. Be sad about it or join the club. (Source: The Economist, July 2026)
